Match Report

Wolves Women impressed in a 10-1 victory over Coventry United in their first pre-season friendly at Hednesford Town. Several new signings made their debuts while Esme Moran and Lauren Jones made up the numbers in the Coventry team.

Emma Cross and Billie Haynes both had early chances for Wolves but their shots went wide. However it was Coventry who were first on the score sheet in the 10th minute against the run of play as Moran hit the ball into the far corner to put the visitors ahead. Wolves were quick to respond though and just a minute later new signing Courtney Jones headed home from a corner for the equaliser.

Wolves were now in control and got themselves ahead in the 21st minute after the ball was played into the box to debutante Leanne Robinson who slotted it past the keeper to make it 2-1. Wolves had plenty more chances and added a third in the 28th minute after a lovely through ball in the middle from Kirstie Bavington found Billie Haynes in the box, who chipped it first time past the onrushing keeper.

Goal number four saw the Cross twins combine as Emma turned provider for sister Jade to finish comfortably past the keeper. They kept up the momentum as Robinson got her second to make it 5-1 to Wolves at the break.

The second half saw Manager Tim Dudding make several changes but Wolves continued to dominate and Jade Cross headed home her second and Wolves’ sixth in the 56th minute. Robinson completed her hat trick ten minutes later before being substituted as Dudding continued to shuffle his pack.

Then it was Jade Cross’s turn to notch up her hat trick in the 80th minute, tapping home from a Billie Haynes cross to make it 8-1. Wolves rounded off the game with two goals in the space of two minutes. Harley Simpson scored on her debut in the 85th minute, followed by a second for Billie Haynes who chipped the keeper after a lovely through ball from Jen Anslow, making it ten goals in total and rounding off an emphatic victory.

Manager Tim Dudding said: “It was another important performance from the girls today. There’s a lot to work on and to improve on, but it’s good to get out there get the ball on the park and get the girls playing. “It was really good to see some of the new arrivals making their debuts fitting in really nicely and getting a bit of confidence on the ball. “I’m pleased with the way we played. The girls made a really good effort so credit to them for that. It’s nice to be back home at Hednesford and we’re looking forward to pushing on to next week.”

Keeper Glenny was then forced off through injury, handing a debut opportunity to Katie Clarke. Play was stopped again as Abi Phillips had to be stretched off and was replaced by Ruby Meeson. There were few chances before the break until Cardiff saw a shot head over the bar. But it was Wolves who had the last chance of the half, with a McQuilkin shot on the volley going just wide.

Wolves were straight out of the blocks in the second half and created a host of chances with McQuilkin coming close again, Butler’s header going wide and Leanne Robinson hitting the post. Robinson then went close again in the 65th minute after Anslow’s deflected cross fell into her path, but her shot was easily saved by the keeper.

Manager Tim Dudding then made several changes with Rachael Howard and Amee Taylor coming on for their debuts. They both had an impact on the game, and Taylor’s shot from outside the box went just wide. Despite some late pressure from Cardiff, it was Wolves who got the decisive goal in the 81st minute. After some great wing play Howard crossed the ball in to Robinson, who hit it first time into the bottom corner to break the deadlock. Cardiff pressed on looking for an equaliser but Wolves held firm for the victory.

Manager Tim Dudding said  “We played in the way that we wanted to today and achieved the outcome we set for the game. “It’s nice when that happens and you come away with the win. The girls have certainly earned that today. “Again it was great to see the young talent doing well alongside the more experienced players and I know there’s lots to build on from today.”

Match Report

After their 10-1 victory in last Sunday’s friendly, this proved a tougher challenge with Wolves finally coming through after a tight game against Cardiff City Women this Sunday, a late goal proving to be the difference between the two sides.

The game was a tight affair with both teams creating early chances. Laura McQuilkin shot just over the bar for Wolves while Cardiff were denied by a save from Sophie Glenny in the Wolves goal. The first real chance of the game fell to Jade Cross in the 26th minute after the keeper fumbled the ball from a McQuilkin shot, but Cross’s effort went wide.

It was Shrewsbury who made the breakthrough in the 30th minute after a ball over the top found Doster who ran into the box and shot past Sophie Glenny in the Wolves goal. Wolves looked to respond and had several chances with Rachael Howard and Leanne Robinson both coming close. Finally the pressure paid off in the 39th minute as Andrea Whetton ran down the wing and crossed for Robinson to head home.

The second half saw Manager Tim Dudding make three changes as he took the opportunity to try out some of the younger players. Wolves were doing well with a volley from Courtney Jones saved by the keeper, but Shrewsbury moved ahead again in the 59th minute after a ball over the top found Doster, who took it round an onrushing Glenny and scored into an open net.

Wolves responded straight away with a second equaliser after a ball into the box was met by Howard, who took it past the defender and scored. With rolling subs, Dudding rang the changes again and Wolves applied the pressure as Jade Hewitt saw her close range shot well saved by the keeper.

Wolves’ determination showed in the 75th minute after a run from the wing by Haynes into the middle. She found space and hit a long distance shot which looped over the keeper and into the net to put Wolves ahead for the first time. Wolves were now showing their fitness, with Aimee Taylor hitting the cross bar from a long range shot and Howard sending a shot wide. Shrewsbury nearly equalised late on after the ball was played through but the chip couldn’t beat Glenny and Wolves ran out 3-2 winnners.

Manager Tim Dudding said:  “It was a performance in which we learnt a lot and I am happy to eventually come away with a win. “We had to dig deep at times but this was a lesson-filled game and there was lots to take away from it. “I think that everyone who came on, particularly the Under 18s graduates did a fantastic job. Games like today are the perfect opportunity for them and it’s really positive to see.”

Match Report

Wolves Women continued their pre-season build up in an entertaining game against Shrewsbury Town Women under floodlights at Market Drayton FC in front of a crowd of almost 200 on Thursday night.

Wolves had the first real chance of the game in the 14th minute after a long range shot from Charlotte Criddle was spilled by the keeper but it was cleared away. It was a good even game with chances for both sides, with Billie Haynes coming closest for Wolves with a close range shot which was saved by the keeper.

Then it was Birmingham and West Midlands’ turn to have the ball in the net, but their goal was ruled out for offside. Wolves kept up the pace and went close again with a header from a corner by Kirsite Bavington which was cleared off the line. Lauren Jones was then forced off with an injury and was replaced by Charlotte Criddle. Wolves ended the first half strongly and easily deserved their 2-0 lead.

The second half saw Birmingham and West Midlands step up their game, coming close early on, but Bavington headed the ball away and it was caught by Foster in the Wolves goal. Manager Tim Dudding then made three changes including a debut for Taylor Davies, but Birmingham and West Midlands pushed on and managed to pull a goal back in the 77th minute after a ball into the box found Charlie Fisher who hit it first time past Foster into the bottom corner to make it 2-1.

Wolves had more chances, with Davies and Criddle both going close, while at the other end Birmingham and West Midlands hadn’t given up looking for the equaliser. It was a more difficult second half for Wolves but they did enough for the victory, rounding off an unbeaten pre-season campaign.

Assistant Manager Tom Davies said:  “We played well especially during the first 30 minutes in which we played some great football. “The second goal was one of the best I’ve seen with some excellent build-up play, and we look to carry that forward.”

Match Report

Wolves Women completed their pre-season preparations with a 2-1 victory over Birmingham and West Midlands Ladies in a tight game at Hednesford Town.

Wolves had a great start to the game, scoring with their first chance on goal in only the 3rd minute.  Jade Cross’s shot was parried by the keeper, but the ball fell into the path of Andrea Whetton who guided it into an open net to break the deadlock. Wolves grew in confidence with Cross on the ball again, passing to Rachael Howard, but her effort was stopped by the keeper.

With some slick moves from Wolves they were soon on the scoresheet again, this time through Billie Haynes, who found space in the box to tap in the second goal. Wolves were awarded a penalty in the 21st minute for a foul on Jade Cross. Courtney Jones’s shot was saved, but the keeper was adjudged to have encroached and the penalty had to be retaken. Jones, took the shot again, but again the keeper saved.

Match Report

It was a baptism of fire for promoted Wolves Women, facing last season’s champions Blackburn Rovers Ladies in their first game back in the FA Women’s Premier League Northern Division.  A tough opening 45 minutes saw Wolves 3-0 down at the break, but they rallied in the second half to produce a credible performance.

Blackburn were straight onto the attack, firing shots at every opportunity, while Wolves did well to break up the play. The pressure paid off for Blackburn in the 23rd minute as some nice passing play found McCoy who headed in to put the home side ahead.

McCoy doubled the score just four minutes later after Flanagan’s blocked shot rebounded into her path and she chipped it past Glenny in the Wolves goal to make it 2-0. Blackburn were on the hunt for a third goal and they got it in the 37th minute after a great through ball found Pearson whose shot went past an onrushing Glenny.

With Wolves 3-0 down at the break Manager Tim Dudding made some changes, moving Emma Cross  into midfield. This had an impact, with Wolves keeping Blackburn at bay despite their pressure, and they started to create some chances of their own. Kirstie Bavington and Andrea Whetton both sent shots over the bar before Jade Cross shot wide from 20 yards out.

Blackburn’s efforts were repelled by some valiant defending from Wolves and saves from Glenny. Wolves almost got a consolation goal with the last kick off the game after they managed to get round the defence, but Jade Cross’s chip was just wide of the target.

Manager Tim Dudding said: “There were lots of positives to take from today. It was a very determined performance from us; we tried to play some really good defensive football and that paid off, particularly in the second half” “Credit to the girls for digging deep when they needed to and having to perform so differently in the second half. We matched them for many parts of the game. “It was also exciting to see two Under 18 players and an Under 18 graduate making appearances today.”

Match Report

Wolves Women fell to a second successive defeat after they were narrowly beaten 4-3 by Middlesbrough Women in a closely fought encounter at Keys Park. Wolves will consider themselves unlucky to lose, especially after leading twice during the game.

88 page issue - 240 x 165 in size - £3.00

The home side had a dream start as they took the lead just three minutes into the game. Andrea Whetton, Emma Cross and Jade Cross combined in a free-flowing move which resulted in Jade Cross being through one-on-one with the goalkeeper and she kept a cool head to finish and put Wolves in the lead. Wolves’ lead was short lived however, as Middlesbrough hit back almost immediately. A free kick was floated in from the ‘Boro left-hand side and Anna Birtwhistle rose highest in the box to head home.

Despite the two early goals, there was very little in terms of clear goal scoring opportunities for the rest of the half. Middlesbrough were reduced to shots from distance as the Wolves defence held firm. Just as half-time was approaching, Wolves retook the lead through left-back Jen Anslow. She found herself in space on the left wing and her cross-come-shot looped over the head of Middlesbrough goalkeeper Laura Wareham to give Wolves a 2-1 half-time lead.

The second-half began very much the same as the first, with both teams creating a number of chances but nobody was able to take advantage. Middlesbrough Women pulled themselves level just before the hour mark as a long ball over the top found Emily Scarr and she was able to tuck the ball home. Then less than ten minutes later, Middlesbrough took the lead for the first time in the match. Wolves failed to clear a cross from the left flank which lead to a goalmouth scramble before Bianca Owens appeared to turn the ball home and put Middlesbrough in front.

In an attempt to get back into the game, Wolves’ manager Tim Dudding made two substitutions first replacing Claire Hakeman with Laura McQuilkin and then bringing off Whetton for Courtney Jones.

Wolves then pulled the scores level as Anslow’s cross-come-shot again looped up in the air and over Wareham in the Middlesbrough goal, giving her a second goal of the game. With ten minutes remaining of normal time, both teams were pushing to find a winner and Wolves looked the most likely to nick a late goal.

However, it was the away side who put themselves in front in the 88th minute. A hopeful ball forward from defender Emma Foster was unfortunately misjudged by Issy Foster in the Wolves goal, the ball flew over her head and bounced over the line, much to the delight of the Middlesbrough players and bench.

Wolves assistant manager Tom Davies felt Wolves deserved at least a point: ‘’A draw would have been fair. It was a hard-fought game and it’s sickening to lose it in the manner that we have. ‘’The only thing is we need to stay more compact and try and concede less goals. We’ve started to score more goals, going forward we’re looking really good so we just need to try and work on our defensive shape.’’

The defeat leaves Wolves Women still without a point in the FA Women’s Premier League Northern Division after two games.

With Feds still having most of the chances, they finally made the breakthrough in the 43rd minute as Carla Lee turned in the box and hit a curling shot over Glenny in the Wolves goal to give them the lead at the break.

Wolves started brightly in the second half, with shots from Robinson and Simpson both coming close. In the 59th minute an excellent free kick from Courtney Jones found Kirstie Bavington, whose header was denied by a fantastic save from Feds’ keeper Tomkins. Wolves pressed on, looking for an equaliser, but this gave Feds a chance to increase their lead. In the 62nd minute Chantelle Thompson collected the ball 20 yards out and fired her shot, which curled past Glenny and into the top corner to make it 2-0 to the visitors.

Manager Tim Dudding then made some changes, bringing on Claire Hakeman and Billie Haynes, and they were nearly gifted a goal after the keeper fumbled a shot from Jade Cross, but she managed to push it out for a corner. Wolves never gave up, battling to the end, but they couldn’t find a way through, handing Feds a passage through to the next round.

Manager Tim Dudding said “Our performance today wasn’t good enough. We lowered our standards and didn’t play the way we wanted to. “We seemed to give Liverpool more respect and as a result they punished us. Credit to them for their very well struck goals, but from our point of view we see them as errors and there is certainly lots to reflect upon and to improve on in training.”

Match Report

After two defeats in the league Wolves were looking to bounce back as they turned their attention to the FA Women’s Premier League Cup. However Liverpool Feds, riding high after consecutive league wins, had other ideas and ran out 2-0 winners with a goal in each half.

It was the visitors who took control early on, and could have scored but for a goal line clearance. They grew in confidence, creating chance after chance, but were kept at bay by Wolves’ defence. Wolves’ first real chance came in the 30th minute after a through ball from Emma Cross found Leanne Robinson, but her shot was collected by the keeper. Then it was Jade Cross’s turn to attack, but her header went wide of the goal.

Wolves Women suffered their third league defeat of the season after a dramatic last 12 minutes of the game which saw them go from leading to losing 4-1 away to Bradford City Women.

It was the home side who took control early on, but an Ellie Olds shot came back off the crossbar.Wolves’ first real chance came in the 10th minute from a corner taken by Billie Haynes which produced a scramble in the box, but Bradford managed to clear. Just two minutes later a Wolves free kick found Jade Cross whose shot was saved by the keeper.

Bradford came close in the 16th minute but a great save from Clarke in the Wolves goal kept the score at 0-0. The game was end to end, but it was Wolves who finally made the breakthrough in the 36th minute after a free kick by Courtney Jones was flicked onto Jade Cross, and she headed past the keeper to put Wolves ahead.

In the 44th minute Wolves had a great chance to double their lead when they were awarded a penalty, but Jen Anslow’s spot kick was saved and the half finished with Wolves leading by a single goal.

Bradford were awarded a corner just after the start of the second half, but Wolves cleared their lines, and went straight up to the other end, but Jade Cross’s shot was saved by the keeper. In the 55th minute a shot from Leanne Robinson rattled the crossbar and went out for a goal kick to Bradford.

Manager Tim Dudding then rang the changes, bringing on Laura McQuilkin and Jodie Bragan. Bradford were having a good spell, but Wolves did well to keep them at bay. Bradford pressed on and finally got the equaliser in the 78th minute after some great passing play found Ellie White whose shot beat Clarke in the Wolves goal.

Bradford, now brimming with confidence pushed on, and just three minutes later they were ahead when a shot from the corner rebounded off Clarke for Charlotte Stuart to head home and make it 2-1. They added a third in the 85th minute with a free kick from Abi Lee which Clarke couldn’t get a proper connection too. To make matters worse for Wolves, the final few minutes saw Anslow sent off before Bradford got a fourth goal with the last kick of the game to finish off the worst 12 minutes of the day.

Wolves Assistant Manager Tom Davies said:  “It was a tough result to take after being 1-0 up at 78 minutes. “The scoreline doesn’t reflect the performance and it doesn’t reflect the game. “We need to learn from those missed chances early on, but we have to take the positives from the result.”

The game was end to end but it was Albion who went ahead in the 26th minute after a ball over the top found Nicole Dale who ran into the box and shot past Isobelle Foster in the Wolves goal to put the visitors ahead. Albion doubled their lead ten minutes later after a long range shot by Gina Burton was spilt by Foster and was adjudged to have crossed the line. The first half ended with both teams down to ten after an altercation between Kirstie Bavington and Antonia Smith saw them both dismissed and Wolves went in at the break 2-0 down.

The second half saw Wolves pushing on to get back into the game as they committed more players forward, but Albion struck again in the 73rd minute from Brodie Vinzce’s free-kick which keeper Foster got her hands to but couldn’t keep out. Still undeterred, Wolves continued to push on and were rewarded with a goal in the 78th minute after Jade Cross sent a ball into Robinson who dispatched it into the net to give Wolves some hope.

Wolves’ continuous pressure turned out to be their downfall yet again when Albion caught them on the break to nick a fourth from Leanne Mitchell with five minutes to go. Jade Cross managed to get a second goal for Wolves in the 88th minute, but the late push wasn’t enough and the game ended 4-2 to Albion.

Assistant Manager Tom Davies said: “I felt the result was fair, which is disappointing, but we have Sunday’s game away at Guiseley Vixens coming up and we have to pick ourselves up and go again.”

Match Report

A late comeback wasn’t enough for Wolves as they fell to their fifth consecutive defeat in the Black Country derby on Wednesday night.

With both teams without a win before this game, tension was high and added to the atmosphere in front of a crowd of over 300 supporters under floodlights at Hednesford Town FC. Wolves had the first real chance of the game with Leanne Robinson seeing her half volley saved by keeper Lucy Gardner against her former club.

Match Report

Wolves Women secured their first point of the season in an exciting game which saw them lead for over an hour before conceding two goals in eight minutes, and then fight back for the equaliser.

With both teams without a win this season this game was anticipated to be a tense one for both sides, and it certainly lived up to expectations. Wolves had a great start and got an early goal in just the third minute after a deflection from the keeper found Leanne Robinson, whose shot trickled over the line.

Guiseley’s first real chance came in the 10th minute but the shot was saved well by Glenny in the Wolves goal. Guiseley continued to press, coming close from a corner and hitting the crossbar from outside the box, but Wolves held their own and went in at the end of the first half with their lead intact.

Wolves had the first chance of the second half in the 48th minute as a free kick on the edge of the box was floated in by Billie Haynes but was caught by the keeper. Guiseley stepped up the pace searching for the equaliser, coming close from a couple of chances before finally making the breakthrough in the 69th minute. A free kick was floated in and led to a scramble in the box which found Berko who poked the ball into the net to make it 1-1.

Just eight minutes later Guiseley were ahead after a breakaway saw Berko run into the box, rounding the defenders and slotting home past Glenny to get her second of the game. Still undeterred, Wolves responded straight away and drew level in the 80th minute from a free kick from just outside the area by McQuilkin, who bent the ball over the wall and into the net to equalise.. With ten minutes left both teams now pressed for the winner, and Jade Cross saw two attempts thwarted, one by the keeper, and one by the crossbar, as the game finished in a 2-2 draw.

Manager Tim Dudding said:  “It was a game of mixed emotions today. “There were times when I thought we dominated and there were times when we sat back but held our shape well. “Ultimately at the end I thought we were unlucky not to come away with three points but it’s great to have a point on the board and to see the resilience we showed to get back into the game. “We’ve got to take those positives and look to build from them.”

Match Report

Honours were even as Wolves Women secured a hard-fought draw in a thrilling game against Stoke City Ladies in the Staffordshire Derby.

Wolves got off to a great start with a goal in the seventh minute which saw Jade Cross run from her own area and into the box to calmly slot home and take the lead. She could have doubled the score just three minutes later but her shot went wide.

Stoke were trying to get back into the game and in the 16th minute they saw an  attack end with a stinging shot from the edge of the box which was saved by Sophie Glenny in the Wolves goal. Then it was Wolves on the attack, with chances for Jade Cross, the returning Anna Price and Billie Haynes all going close. Stoke themselves could have equalised towards the end of the first half, producing a great shot, but Glenny produced an equally great save to keep them at bay and send Wolves in 1-0 up at the break.

It was Stoke who took the initiative at the start of the second half as Cassie Hyde headed home from a corner in the 47th minute to claim the equaliser. Stoke were now pushing on and had several chances, but were held at bay by valiant defending from Wolves.

In the 62nd minute a free-kick from the edge of the box by Haynes went just over the bar. With 15 minutes remaining Wolves Manager Tim Dudding brought on debutante Chloe Williams as Wolves pressed for the elusive winner. In the dying minutes both teams had chances to win the game with Stoke going close in the 90th minute as Glenny tipped a swirling shot over the bar. The resulting corner was well defended by Wolves and the breakaway was on, but Jade Cross’s shot was saved by the Stoke keeper in an end-to-end finale to the game which ultimately finished all square.

Manager Tim Dudding said:  “We started well and on the front foot. I thought we deservedly claimed the first half for ourselves. “We were frustrated to concede in the way we did but we picked ourselves up and got the point. “We could have nicked it at the end but it’s good to come away for a second week with another point – we were pleased with that.”

Match Report

Wolves Women suffered their fifth league defeat of the season as they were beaten 1-0 by Nottingham Forest Ladies in a well contested game at Keys Park. Wolves may consider themselves unlucky not to have taken something from the game, in what was a tight and sometimes fiery encounter.

The home side started the game on the back foot, and a number of important saves from Issy Foster in the Wolves’ goal, first from a Nikki Emery strike and then from an Amy Dicken shot, kept the scores level. Despite the away side’s pressure, Wolves managed to create a chance for themselves, but Leanne Robinson fired over after a free kick wasn’t dealt with by the Forest defence.

88 page issue - 240 x 165 in size - £3.00

However, it was the away side who took the lead. Emery‘s low driven ball was tapped home by Trina Greaves from around 10 yards out. Wolves didn’t let the goal affect them though and went close to equalising twice just before the half-time break. Courtney Jones’ long-range curling effort was well saved by the Forest keeper and Jen Anslow found herself with a chance inside the box but she was unable to get her shot on target.

The second-half began much the same way as the first, with both teams’ possession of the ball resulting in very little in terms of goalscoring opportunities. Wolves were buoyed by the away side being reduced to ten players, Dicken receiving a red card from the referee after an off-the-ball incident.

Although it was Wolves with the extra player advantage, they were unable to create any clear goalscoring chances and it was Forest who came the closest to getting the second goal of the game, hitting the bar twice through Hudson.

Wolves Assistant Manager Tom Davies was pleased with the team’s performance despite the result.  He said: ‘’It was a much better performance today. We had two very good chances in the first half and if we had scored it would have been a different game. ‘’Forest were very professional, especially after the red card so credit to them for that. Moving onto next week, we’re hoping to continue to improve and pick up a result to show for that.’’

Match Report

Wolves Women’s winless run continued as they suffered a 1-0 loss at the hands of Fylde Ladies.
Despite the run of eight league games without a win, it was Wolves who started the brightest. A series of chances fell to the home side in the first 10 minutes but they were unable to capitalise on their bright start. Jade Cross had a volley saved by the Fylde goalkeeper after a well worked move and then she fired just wide as the away side failed to deal with a free kick.

88 page issue - 240 x 165 in size - £3.00

Fylde began to get a foothold in the game after starting on the back foot, but a good defensive shape from Wolves meant they were reduced to shots from distance. It was the away side who took the lead shortly before half-time. Fylde attacker Natasha Flint ran into the box and hit a low strike into the bottom corner, this coming just after Issy Foster had made a good save in the Wolves goal.

The second half began in opposite fashion to the first, with Fylde seeing much more of the ball than Wolves and calling Foster into action again a number of times. The Wolves goalkeeper kept her side in the game with several good saves, a close-range dive at the feet of a Fylde attacker the pick of the bunch.     The heroics of Foster seemed to spur the rest of the team on and there was a noticeable step up in performance from the first-half. Wolves suddenly looked like they had more self-belief and confidence that they could take something from the game. Their first chance of the second half fell to Andrea Whetton after she was found by Mai Butler’s ball over the top, but she fired her shot wide of the goal.

Jade Cross then came close again for Wolves, her shot being blocked in the box, before the woodwork prevented Fylde from doubling their lead. Wolves continued to apply the pressure in the final minutes of the game but were unable to find a breakthrough. Jen Anslow’s attempted cross-come-shot which forced the Fylde goalkeeper to push the ball wide was the closest they came.

Wolves manager Tim Dudding was proud of his team’s performance despite their recent run of form.  He said:  ‘’It was another disappointing result today, particularly after how we performed in the second-half. “We know we’re close, we know we’re not that far from those three points. ‘’The players are digging in on the pitch; we’re not losing five or six-nil. We’ve got to dig deep at this time, we’ve got to hold together and keep belief and that’s what we’re doing going into Tuesday.”

Match Report

Wolves Women secured their first league victory of the season with an impressive 2-1 win over local rivals West Bromwich Albion in front of a crowd of over 200 people in the Black Country Derby at Boldmere St. Michael’s FC.

Wolves started strongly and had an early chance as a free kick from Courtney Jones on the edge of the box swerved over the wall and rattled off the bar. The visitors continued to press and in the 18th minute Wolves captain Anna Price celebrated her 250th appearance for the club by firing an 18 yard shot past Gardner in the Albion goal to put Wolves ahead.

Albion pushed forward on the hunt for the equaliser but were denied twice - first with a goal line clearance, and then having a goal disallowed for a foul on Wolves’ keeper Sophie Glenny. The game was end to end with both teams creating chances. Billie Haynes went close for Wolves before Albion hit the post and were again denied by Glenny. In the 44th minute Wolves doubled their lead as Haynes chipped the ball over Gardner from 45 yards out giving Wolves a 2-0 lead at the break.

Albion started the second half pressing forward and had a great chance after a scramble in the box ended in a shot on goal, but Glenny made the save.

Wolves responded with a long range shot from Emma Cross which went wide.. In the 74th minute Albion pulled a goal back through Jennifer Kikomeko whose flicked header beat Glenny to make it 2-1 to Wolves, setting up a nervy last 15 minutes.

The game was still switching from end to end with both teams having opportunities to score, but Wolves held firm to record their first league victory of the season and move off the bottom of the table.

Wolves Manager Tim Dudding said:  “I’m ecstatic with the performance tonight and for the players. They thoroughly deserved the win as they were the ones who put the graft in. “It is justification for what we do and the way we play football. Those three points were long overdue and tonight we have been able to prove that we can do it. Now we have to do it again.”

Match Report

An early extra-time goal saw Wolves Women fall to a 2-1 defeat against Long Eaton United Ladies in the FA Women’s Premier League Plate.  Wolves made five changes from the side that beat West Bromwich Albion Women in midweek and included some U18s as they played host to the first division side.
The home team began the game on the front foot and almost put themselves ahead early on, Billie Haynes’cross was headed goalward by Andrea Whetton but it was straight at the Long Eaton goalkeeper. Wolves’ early pressure failed to materialise into anything and it was the away side that took the lead. A misplaced back-pass was intercepted by Long Eaton’s Viki Adam and she was able to squeeze in from a tight angle, this coming after they had struck the bar with a shot from distance.

The hosts were soon back level, however. Charlotte Criddle twisted and turned and laid the ball off for Haynes who was able to beat the goalkeeper with a low shot into the bottom corner. The introduction of Esme Moran and Anna Price in the second half almost turned the game in Wolves’ favour, with the former coming close on three separate occasions. Moran’s shot from close range cannoned off the crossbar and she then had a shot cleared off the line after a goalmouth scramble. Both chances came after she had a shot from distance saved by the Long Eaton goalkeeper.
Barely two minutes into extra-time, the away side retook the lead. Jade Barber’s ambitious first-time volleylooped over Issy Foster in the Wolves goal to put Long Eaton in front. Long Eaton had the chance to further their lead in the second-half of extra-time but were denied by an incredible save by Foster. Wolves piled the pressure on the away side late on. Emma Cross and Aimee Taylor had the pick of the chances but they were unable to find an equaliser.

Assistant manager Tom Davies said: ‘’We’re disappointed with the result, I’d like to apologise to any fans that came to watch us today, it’s not a result they deserve. ‘’I thought Long Eaton were value for their victory today. We started off the first-half very poorly, we were better in the second half. We were unfortunate, we had some good chances to go in front, but we couldn’t take them.’’

Match Report

A last-minute goal saw Wolves Women fall to a 4-3 defeat in a seven-goal thriller against Leicester City Women at Hednesford Town.

Despite early pressure from Wolves, it was Leicester who went ahead with an early goal in the sixth minute after a cross was deflected into the path of Leigh Dugmore who slotted it past Sophie Glenny in the Wolves goal. Wolves responded in the 14th minute after a corner by Courtney Jones found captain Anna Price who headed home into the top corner to level the score.

The game was end-to-end with chances for both sides, and Leicester had the ball in the net again but the goal was disallowed. There was no mistake this time as Leicester retook the lead in the 36th minute after Brown headed in from a free kick. The game continued to ebb and flow, but Wolves went into the break 2-1 down.

Manager Tim Dudding made some changes early in the second half, with Hakeman and Jones making way for McQuilkin and Bavington. Leicester created a host of chances, but were denied by some excellent goalkeeping from Glenny in the Wolves goal. They eventually found their way through though, with a shot from Mitcham giving the visitors a 3-1 lead.

Wolves responded straight away and got their second goal just a minute later as Jade Cross found Leanne Robinson on the edge of the box. She chipped the keeper to get Wolves back into the game. Wolves now pressed on for the equaliser as Dudding brought on fresh legs in Jodie Bragan. Wolves were looking dangerous from set pieces, with Jen Anslow and Price both going close.

Their persistence finally paid off in the 87th minute as Jade Cross’s effort beat the keeper to make it 3-3 as the final whistle approached. But the point was snatched away in the 89th minute as Axten’s long distance shot looped over Glenny to give the visitors the win.

Assistant Manager Tom Davies said:  “It’s a disappointing result after some great play. I thought we won a lot of individual battles and played how we wanted to play, and that in turn created chances and we took those chances. We had opportunities from outside the box, put crosses into the box and we scored goals so that’s a big positive. “We’ll take that into next week’s game and we know we are ready for that next challenge.”

Match Report

A battling performance wasn’t enough for Wolves Women as they were beaten 5-3 at Keys Park by Huddersfield Town Ladies. Wolves managed to pull themselves level despite being 2-0 and 3-1 down, but were unable to hold on for a point.
In what was a thrilling first-half, which saw five goals, Wolves started the brightest, but it was the away team who took an early lead. A free-kick from the right-hand side was floated in and Wolves were unable to deal with it. The ball eventually fell to Huddersfield striker Emily Heckler who fired home to put the visitors ahead.
Huddersfield nearly doubled their lead through Sarah Danby not long after, but she shot wide. Wolves then had three excellent opportunities to pull themselves level. Leanne Robinson fired a Billie Haynes cross over and then volleyed an effort just wide of the target. This came after Emma Cross saw an effort from a tight angle saved by Charlie Kenyon in the Huddersfield goal.
The away side then doubled their lead not long after. Heckler’s shot was saved by Issy Foster, but she was unable to keep out Kate Mallin’s rebound.  Wolves got themselves back into the game almost immediately, Natalie Widdal’s lofted ball over the top was raced onto by Jade Cross, who beat the Huddersfield goalkeeper to the ball, and was able to slot home from an angle.
Mallin restored Huddersfield’s two goal lead just a few minutes later. After a number of shots were blocked and saved, Wolves were unable to clear the ball away and Mallin eventually tucked the ball home to make it 3-1 to Huddersfield. Emma Cross was unfortunate not to get a goal back for Wolves almost immediately, as her goalbound header was cleared off the line. From the resulting corner Wolves were able to halve the visitors’ lead. A scramble in front of the Huddersfield goal saw the ball finally turned in, in what appeared to be an own goal.
Wolves were then level just minutes into the second-half. Jen Anslow’s floated ball in looped over the head of Heckler, who was now in the Huddersfield goal. The second-half began very much the same way as the first, with Wolves on the front foot. However, just as in the first-half, Huddersfield delivered a sucker punch, putting themselves back ahead. A powerful long-range effort from Brittany Sanderson managed to find the bottom corner.

Huddersfield then restored their two-goal lead. Another long-range effort, this time from Danielle Whitham, found its way past Foster to put the visitors 5-3 up. However, the home side didn’t let this deter them from their task.  Haynes’ cross was almost parried in by the goalkeeper before Anna Price’s shot from distance was well saved.  Wolves were unable to create any more clear-cut chances but a smart save by Foster denied Huddersfield from increasing their lead late on.

Manager Tim Dudding said: “It was a frustrating game today. When we’ve got the game back to 3-3 and it’s there for the taking, we haven’t done that, and we haven’t used the momentum we’ve built up. “Credit to the girls, though. It was another difficult and another odd game that they had to deal with and they deserve respect for trying to turn it around. We just need to keep believing and keep working hard and we’ll get there.”

Wolves Women fell to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Bradford City Women in a tense affair at Hednesford Town. With two points and one place separating the sides coming into the game, both were looking to pick up much-needed points.

Bradford had the brighter start, with several early chances. Their best opportunity came from a shot on the edge of the box, but it was easily caught by Foster in the Wolves goal. Wolves pushed forward and won a free-kick in the 20th minute, but Laura McQuilkin’s shot was caught by the keeper.

Bradford were having more of the play, shooting just wide and hitting the crossbar before their pressure eventually paid off in the 37th minute. A corner was fumbled into the path of Campbell who poked it in to put the visitors ahead before the break.

Wolves started the second half strongly and had an early opportunity after a lofted ball from Mai Butler found Jade Cross. She ran into the box and took a shot at goal but it was stopped by the keeper. Wolves continued to press, coming close from a corner, but it was Bradford who got a second in the 55th minute after a corner was cleared, only as far as Smith who hit a thunderous shot past Foster to make it 2-0.

Wolves pushed on and went close with a first-time volley from Jade Cross going wide and Leanne Robinson’s shot being caught by the keeper. Manager Tim Dudding then rang the changes, bringing on Ruby Meeson and Esme Moran, but Bradford added a third in the 73rd minute. Foster pulled off a fantastic diving save, but she was unable to stop the rebound from Parnham who poked it in. Wolves had chances to get a goal back in the last ten minutes with Bragan and Robinson both going close, but their efforts were in vain and Bradford ran out 3-0 winners.

Manager Tim Dudding said: “It was a heart-wrenching result today. We didn’t really give a good account of ourselves, but all we can do is re-group and re-evaluate. We’ll work hard and keep fighting and keep working.”

Wolves started well and had an early chance after a corner from Jen Anslow found Kirstie Bavington but her header went wide. They kept up the pressure with Anslow and Charlotte Criddle both going close from free kicks, and finally broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute after a lofted ball found Jade Cross who raced into the box and shot past the keeper.

They doubled their lead just three minutes later as Jade Cross turned provider for Criddle to make it two. Criddle added her second goal in the 31st minute after she got on the end of a through ball from Bavington to give Wolves a 3-0 lead. Wolves peppered the Lye goal with shots and in the 40th minute caught them with a counter attack as Jodie Bragan found Jade Cross, who hit the ball calmly past the keeper for her second and Wolves’ fourth.

Caretaker Manager Steve Cullis rang the changes at the start of the second half, bringing on Under 18s players Aimee Taylor and Rachael Howard along with stalwart Natalie Widdal. Wolves continued to press, but Lye had a rare chance in the 48th minute after a free kick was deflected and the shot bobbled but was saved by Issy Foster. In the 51st minute Wolves were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box. The keeper was unable to hang on to Jen Anslow’s shot, making it 5-0 to Wolves.

Their sixth goal came after some lovely passing play which ended with Jade Cross scoring to complete her hat trick. Lye got a goal back in 63rd minute as Wolves were caught out with a ball over the top when Rhiannon Bate chipped over an onrushing Foster to make it 6-1.

Wolves got a seventh goal in the 71st minute as Jade Cross took the ball around the keeper and shot into an empty net for her fourth of the game. Cross was then replaced by Under 18s player Nikki Lal who got on the score sheet herself in the 86th minute, running past the defence and coolly slotting home to round off an impressive 8-1 win.

Caretaker Manager Steve Cullis said:  “I was pleased for the players as it's been a difficult couple of months and I think first and foremost it's nice to see them playing the football I know they’re capable of. “I’m really proud to see some of the players I’ve coached at a younger level breaking through to represent the first team and I think they’re going to be there to stay. The hunger to play is what we want for the club and they really showed that tonight.”

Match Report

Wolves Women were knocked out of the Women’s FA Cup in a nine goal thriller which saw them fall to a 6-3 defeat at the hands of Brighouse Town Ladies, despite leading three times in the game at the Dual Seal Stadium.

Wolves got off to a great start, going ahead in the second minute after Jade Cross found Charlotte Criddle outside the box and her first time shot looped over the keeper. Brighouse responded straight away with an equaliser after the ball was played in to Jodie Redgrave whose shot went past Issy Foster in the Wolves goal.

Wolves quickly regained their composure and went ahead again in the 11th minute after a long range shot from Criddle beat the keeper for her second goal of the game. Again, Brighouse were quick to reply, and just a minute later the ball was played in to Danni Brown just inside the box and her shot went into the bottom corner to make it 2-2. The game was end to end with Brighouse hitting the crossbar before an excellent chance for Wolves saw Jade Cross denied by a great save from the Brighouse keeper, and the first half finished all square.

Wolves started the second half well and retook the lead in the 50th minute after Criddle turned the defender outside the box and despatched a curling shot to complete her hat trick. Brighouse fought back again and equalised in the 57th minute after a free kick was cleared away, only for the resulting shot to deflect into the path of Doyle who hit it past Foster. Just three minutes later Brighouse were ahead for the first time in the game after some good passing play found Brown, who struck the ball into an empty net for her second goal of the game, making it 4-3.

Brighouse were awarded a penalty in the 65th minute, but Redgrave’s shot went over the bar. Foster was able to keep Brighouse at bay with a host of good saves, but they were awarded another penalty in the 80th minute, and this time made no mistake as Aimi Beresford converted. She got her second goal in the 89th minute with a powerful shot which went under the keeper as the game ended 6-3.

Caretaker Manager Steve Cullis said:  “It was a difficult game but I am proud of the players and the way they continued to battle right to the 90th minute. “We pride ourselves in having young talent, especially from the Regional Talent Centre, so it’s good to give those players minutes and exposure to female football in tough conditions. “We’re going to keep doing the right things for our club, and will do our best until the end of the season.”

Match Report

A one-sided game saw Wolves Women defeat Sutton Coldfield Town Ladies 5-0 in the Birmingham County Cup at Keys Park on Sunday afternoon.

The victory courtesy of goals from Jade Hewitt, Jade Cross, Anna Price 2 and an own goal saw Wolves progress to the fourth round of the Birmingham County Cup.

Wolves dominated the ball in the early stages of the game and soon got themselves in front. Some loveley combination play between Jade Cross and Billie Haynes worked a good opening with resulted in Laura Fryer , the Sutton Coldfield defender turning the ball into her own net off the inside of the post.

The home side continued to dominate and went close to doubling their lead numerous times. Jen Anlsow, Kirtsy Bavington,, Charlotte Criddle and Haynes all had chances but were unable to find the net. Just before the half-time break Wolves did double their lead. Anslow's cross from the right was headed home y Price for her first of the game.

The second-half began in similar fashion to the first, with Wolves having plenty  of chances to widen their lead but being unable to take them. Wolves' persistence eventually paid off when Hewitt was the quickest to react to a blocked Andrea Whetton cross. She beat the on rushing goalkeeper with a lob at the front post to put Wolves three in front.

Goalkeeper Issy Foster was then called into action for the first time in the game, diving backwards to brilliantly deny Hayley Chatwin's 25 yard effort. The hosts' fourth and fifth goals soon arrived in quick succession to put the game beyond any doubt. Jade Cross slotted home after an Anslow cross and then Anna Price got her second of the game, again heading home from Anslow's corner.

Acting Manager Steve Cullis was pleased with the result and the performance. He said "We were confident in possession, we dominated the ball. We've lacked that cutting edge so to score five goals and keep a clean sheet was pleasing. It's all about building confidence and i think games like today will do that

Wolves got off to a bright start and had the first chance of the game from a corner but Anna Price's shot was blocked. After chances at either end it was Middlesbrough who wnet ahead in the 7th minute. Kepper Katie Clarke made the initial save but the ball fell to Scarr who slotted home. Middlesbrough doubled their lead in the 12th minute as a clearance fell to Havelock and her shot curled past Clarke.

Wolves were looking to get back into the game and came close as some lovely passing play found Jen Anslow who crossed the ball in to Andrea Whetton, but her shot was blcoked. Wolves were now finding their feet and managed to get on the scoresheet in the 29th minute after Jade Cross' ball found Laura McQuilken whose shot lobbed the 'keeper to make it 2-1. Buoyed by their goal, Wolves continued to press, with Jade Cross, Kirstie Bavington and Laura McQuilkin all going close before the end of the first half.

Wolves had an early chance in the second half as an initial shot by Jade Cross was blocked and fell to Jade Hewitt, but her volley was caught by the keeper. Then Middlesbrough made no mistake after nice passing play found Scarr in the box and she slotted home her second and Middlesbrough's third.

Wolves rang the changes, bringing on substitutes Billie Haynes, Charlotte Criddle and Courtney Jones, but they could not withstand the late pressure from Middlesbrough, who scored four quick goals in the last ten minutes, with Scarr completing her hat trick, Owens getting two and Kelly getting one as the game finished 7-1.

Captain Anna Price said: "It was a disappointing result against the league leaders, but we have to take the positives out of the game. The first half saw some of the best football we've played and it was individual errors which let us down. We go again against Derby in two weeks' time".

Match Report

A late second half-fight back wasn't enough for Wolves Women as they were knocked out of the Birmingham County Cup after falling to a 3-1 defeat to Coventry United Ladies. The Wolves girls will be disappointed to exit the competition at the quarter-final stage after overcoming Sutton Coldfield Town Ladies and Lye Town Ladies in previous rounds.

The away side started the game on top and were ahead in the opening ten minutes with the first real shot of the game. A stunning long-range strike from Amber Hughes flew over Beth Powney in the Wolves goal. Wolves then went close twice through Anna Price, whose shot on the swivel was tipped over by the Coventry goalkeeper, and Jade Cross who could only fire into the goalkeeper's hands.

The visitors soon doubled their lead out of practically nothing. The ball fell to Coventry's Helen Dermody on the edge of the area and her low strike managed to beat Powney and slot into the bottom corner.

The second half began in similar fashion to the first, with the two best chances falling to Coventry United. A close-range header came off the outside of the post before the away side put themselves even further in-front, again the chance came from a corner but this time Natalie Haigh was able to find the back of the net with a deflected header.

This seemed to inject some energy into Wolves and they were soon back in the game. Sub Rachael Howard's carving through ball found Jade Cross who slotted it calmly in between the Coventry goalkeeper's legs to give Wolves a glimmer of hope. The hosts continued to push and went close through Howard and Charlotte Criddle twice, but it wasn't enough to help them avoid defeat.

Wolves manager Daniel McNamara said: ''There's a lot of positives and negatives to take from the game. I think first-half we showed them a bit too much respect but second-half we came out with a different mentality. ''At half-time we talked about winning our individual battles and we came out and did that more. We take the positives out of today's game and move onto Stoke City in the league next week, that's where we need to pick up the points.''

Match Report

Wolves Women fell to a heavy 6-0 defeat away at Leicester City Women, moving Leicester into second place in the table with Wolves remaining second from bottom

Leicester were ahead in the first minute as Leigh Dugmore's shot looped over the 'keeper and into the back of the net. The Foxes took control of the game, scoring a further three goals before the break including two penalties netted by Rosie Axten.

The second half saw Wolves trying to get back into the game, and they kept Leicester at bay until the 55th minute when they were undone again as Dugmore scored her second. Wolves kept battling, but had to pick the ball out of the net one more time in the 79th minute before the game finished 6-0 to Leicester.

Assistant Manager Dan Heath said, "It was a difficult game but we kept working hard - especially in the second half. Our young players made a big contribution and didn't look out of place, showing good signs for the future.

Match Report

A spirited performance was not enough for Wolves Women who fell to a 2-0 defeat to Huddersfield Town Ladies at the Stafflex Arena. After last week’s 6-0 defeat to second-placed Leicester City Women, Wolves were looking for a response against fourth-placed Huddersfield.

Wolves started the brighter of the two teams and had the ball in the net in the fourth minute, but it was ruled out for offside. This spurred Wolves on, but they were unable to take their chances, with Tayler Davies’s corner in the 21st minute being cleared by the Huddersfield defence.

It was then Huddersfield’s turn to put on the pressure, which finally paid off in the 26th minute as Danielle Whitham’s long range shot beat Katie Clarke in the Wolves goal to make it 1-0 to the home side. Huddersfield were looking for a second goal and had several chances, but were kept at bay by Clarke. Wolves’ final chance before the break fell to Billie Haynes, but her shot hit the side netting and the visitors went into the break 1-0 down.

The start of the second half saw Wolves in the ascendency, with a shot from Haynes going just wide in the 52nd minute. But Huddersfield fought back and sent a header wide five minutes later. Manager Dan McNamara brought on Charlotte Criddle in place of Haynes as Wolves kept pushing for the equaliser. They went close in the 68th minute as a shot from Tammi George was saved by the keeper.

Debutante Isobel Deery joined from the subs’ bench as Wolves pressed hard. Jade Cross and Charlotte Criddle both went close before they combined, resulting in Cross’s overhead kick going just wide of the post. With Wolves pushing forward, they were caught out in the 92nd minute with a breakaway goal from Ella Harris, leaving Clarke with no chance and giving Huddersfield a 2-0 win.

Match Report

Wolves Women were unfortunate not to take all three points from their hard-fought encounter with Fylde Ladies at Kellamergh Park. Wolves’ young side acquitted themselves well against a strong Fylde team, with both Mai Butler and Natalie Widdal forcing saves from the keeper.

Striker Jade Cross came close as Charlotte Criddle played the ball through the gap between the full back and the centre half for her to run onto, but her shot was deflected by the keeper’s foot. Then Criddle herself hit the cross bar from a free-kick on the edge of the box.

Jade Cross had another one-on-one chance, and this time the keeper parried the shot but Wolves just couldn't get on the end of it to tap in the rebound. Then Criddle had a shot from just inside the area which the keeper pushed back out, only for Criddle to strike again, this time saved by the keeper’s legs. Despite their best efforts Wolves could not make the breakthrough and the game finished goalless.

Assistant Manager Danny Heath said: “It was a great battling performance today against a good side. We included seven Under 18 players in the squad, with five of them starting. “We kept a clean sheet and also created numerous chances to score, including several one on one situations which could have resulted in us winning the game.”

Match Report

Wolves Women battled hard to ensure they picked up a point as they drew 1-1 with Blackburn Rovers Ladies at Keys Park. Despite being on the back foot for most of the game, Wolves dug in deep and frustrated a good Blackburn side.

After an even start to the game, in which there was very little in terms of goalmouth action, it was the hosts who took the lead through Andrea Whetton. She picked the ball up on the right and looked to pick out Jade Cross in the middle of the box, but her cross-come-shot looped over the head of Danielle Hill in the Blackburn goal and over the line, hitting the post on its way in.

Blackburn then began to take the game to Wolves, twice coming close from corners as well as striker, Natasha Flint, missing several chances. Wolves then almost doubled their lead through Mai Butler. A counter-attack ended in the hosts winning a corner, Butler rose highest to meet the ball but her header cannoned back off the crossbar.

The second-half began with the visitors on top and their pressure soon resulted in them pulling level. A corner was swung in from the right and, after a scramble in the box, the ball was eventually bundled home by Lynda Shepherd. The game continued to be contested well by both teams and, despite a lot of pressure from the visitors, Wolves ensured they were limited to shots from distance.

Jade Cross almost gave Wolves all three points when she rounded the goalkeeper, but her shot was cleared off the line. Undeterred by wave after wave of Blackburn attacks, Wolves held firm and were able to claim a very good point.

Wolves Women Manager Dan McNamara said: “It was a great performance today against a very good Blackburn side. We dug deep, defended well and battled for the point.”

Match Report

Resilience, jubilation and then frustration summed up Wolves Women’s trip to Derby as they let a late winner slip to an even later equaliser to return home with one point. Jade Cross topped off her more than admirable performance with a goal which was, in turn, cancelled out just minutes later; Kirsty Allen delivered the bitter blow.

The best and first chance of the match fell to Billie Haynes after some great work down the right-hand side from Cross. Her blistering pace caused the Derby back line problems throughout the first half. Cross cut back to Haynes whose tamed effort only found the gloves of Morgan. Keeper Katie Clarke was first called into action late in the half after a wonderful defensive display from Wolves in the opening half. She palmed away a long range, dipping effort from Derby’s Sims. Little else warranted worry from either keeper as the two sides endured a 45 minute midfield battle.

For much of the second half, the cagey affair continued. Jen Anslow gave an  exemplary performance in a strong display. Cross then got the goal she more than deserved. After constant unselfish running, the attacker put her side in front in the 80th minute. A cute, lofted pass eluded the Derby defenders and Cross needed no less than two touches to bring the ball under control and stroke it past Morgan into the bottom left hand corner.

The celebrations, though, were short lived as Allen equalled the score after a deep corner found its way to the back post. Allen made no mistake from the goal mouth and rocketed the ball into the roof of the net.

Wolves manager Dan McNamara expressed his disappointment with the result but believes that there are lots of positives to take: “It feels like a loss for me. Very disappointed. Very disappointing. But once the dust has settled and I can get back home, we can start to have a look at the positives.” He went on to commend the performance of Cross: “That’s probably the fourth game on the bounce when she’s been absolutely fantastic for me. The style we’re having to play involves her at times being very isolated, working her socks off and at times she’s struggled in front of goal and her confidence has taken a knock, but today has just reminded her of how good and clinical she is.”

Despite starting the game on the front foot, Wolves saw themselves fall behind as they failed to clear their lines. After a scramble in their box the ball eventually fell to Guiseley attacker Emily Heckler who prodded home to give the visitors the lead. Wolves continued to have the upper hand after they went behind and had two penalty appeals waved away by the referee.

Billie Haynes then went close but her shot was saved by Lauren Joyce in the Guiseley goal before Courtney Jones’ free kick from distance whistled just wide of the post. The hosts were soon deservedly level, Jen Anslow’s cross from the left looked to pick out Jade Cross but instead looped up over the goalkeeper and into the net to give Wolves the goal their play had deserved.

Guiseley almost retook the lead straight away as they swung a corner in and it clipped off the top of the crossbar before going behind. Wolves then began to pile on the pressure once again, two Anslow corners went close and a Haynes strike from the edge of the area was tipped wide.

The second half began in the complete opposite fashion to the first; Wolves started on the backfoot but were able to ride the Guiseley pressure. Chloe Williams and Charlotte Criddle then went close as Wolves looked to find a winner. ith just a minute of normal play to go, Wolves won a free kick from around 35 yards out. Criddle stepped up and fired the ball over the Guiseley goalkeeper to give the hosts all three points.

Wolves Women manager Dan McNamara said: ‘’I thought we were very good in the first half, second half I don’t think we were as good but I don’t care about any of that today. The girls deserve that. ‘’We’ve just got to keep this momentum going. That ‘impossible’ is now slowly turning into the possible.’’

Match Report

Wolves Women kept their survival hopes alive with a brilliant 2-1 win on a hot sunny afternoon at Bilston Town FC. Goals from captain Anna Price and an 88th minute winner from Jen Anslow gave Wolves their second win in succession and brought their unbeaten run to a total of five games.
Wolves started well and had their first chance of the game in the fifth minute as a shot from Jade Cross hit the bar. At the other end Clarke made a good save in the Wolves goal. Wolves won a corner in the 20th minute, which was half cleared to Jen Anslow. Her cross found the head of Anna Price who thundered the ball into the back of the net to put the home side ahead.

Wolves put on the pressure following the goal, but didn't have any clear cut chances, and it was Derby County who could have equalised as the ball ricocheted in the area, but resulted in a goal kick for Wolves. In the melee Mai Butler was injured and the teams took advantage of a much-needed drinks break during her treatment.
Wolves were awarded a corner following a good run from Jade Cross, but the corner was well defended by Derby. Wolves pressed before the break as a ball in from Jade Cross fell awkwardly for Billie Haynes and her shot was cleared for a Wolves throw. Then a cross from Anslow was claimed easily by the Derby keeper. The final chance of the half fell to Derby as a scramble in the Wolves' box was cleared well and Wolves went in 1-0 ahead at the break.
The second half began with Derby being awarded a penalty in the 48th minute, but Andi Bell sent the ball wide of the goal. Then it was Wolves' turn to pressurise as they hit the post. The game was end to end, and Price headed away a Derby corner before the visitors finally equalised in the 58th minute as Bell made amends for her penalty miss, heading home from a Kirsty Allen ball in to make it 1-1.
Derby were pressurising with Clarke pushing the ball out for a corner, but it was cleared by Butler. Manager Dan McNamara rang the changes, bringing on Natalie Widdal for Courtney Jones, Charlotte Criddle for Billie Haynes and Rachael Howard for Andrea Whetton. Criddle had an immediate effect, sending a through ball to Jade Cross. Her shot shaved the post and went just wide. A free-kick to Wolves taken by Anslow resulted in a goal kick to Derby. Then it was Anslow on the attack, making a weaving run towards goal and slotting home the winner in the 88th minute to give Wolves the all-important win.

Manager Dan McNamara said: “What a performance again; I’m so proud of each and everyone of them. To win it that late again with another moment of such quality tells you all you need to know about this group of players. They don’t stop, they’ve shown heart, desire and a real togetherness today. hey deserve it, we all deserve that today, everyone involved with Wolves Women. That’s three out of four cup finals complete. One final push to achieve the impossible.”

Match Report

A brilliant 5-0 win away at Nottingham Forest Ladies on the final day of the season rounded off a run of 6 games unbeaten for Wolves Women and moved them off the bottom of the table at the expense of West Bromwich Albion.

In the searing heat, Forest had the first shot on target in the fifth minute, but it was Wolves who took the lead just 2 minutes later as captain Anna Price headed home from a Jen Anslow corner. In the 12th minute Wolves doubled their lead as Billie Haynes latched onto a loose ball and managed to find the back of the net.

The visitors now had their tails up and made it 3-0 as Haynes turned provider for Jade Cross. Wolves pressed on, forcing several corners with no reply from Forest and went in at the break 3-0 up.

Forest started the second half well, pinning Wolves back in their own half for the first 10 minutes, and forcing an excellent save from Clarke in the Wolves goal. Wolves got their passing game working again, with Jade Cross, Andrea Whetton and Jen Anslow all going close, and Forest’s players becoming frustrated.

In the 70th minute a screamer from Anslow was well held by Thomas in the Forest goal. Price then headed just wide from a corner before Chloe Williams made it 4–0 to Wolves in the 85th minute as her shot hit the post and went in. In the 79th minute Jade Cross was brought down in the area and Wolves were awarded a penalty. Before it could be taken the Forest captain earned herself a second yellow card for kicking the ball away and was sent off. Substitute Charlotte Criddle stepped up and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to get Wolves’ fifth goal and round off a resounding win.

Despite their fighting end to the season, Wolves find themselves in the bottom two, but must now wait until the FA announce the new Women’s Super League and Premier League structure after the play-offs on 27th May to find out whether they will be relegated.

Manager Dan McNamara said: “That’s been coming for a while; what a performance. To come away from home in a must win game and play with such passion, desire and determination at such a ferocious tempo sums up the players’ attitude over the last 7 games. They deserve to stay in this league. They’ve proved that by going 6 games unbeaten and taking 12 points. I couldn’t be prouder. “Thanks for all the support from the fans today and since I came into the club. The feel good factor is back at Wolves and I’m really excited for the future.”
