Match Report

Wolves Women continued their preparation for the new season with an impressive 3-0 win over Manchester United Women U19s courtesy of goals from Anna Morphet, Jen Anslow and Courtney Jones. The somewhat dominant display gave Wolves their third victory of pre-season as they look to hit the ground running in the Women’s Premier League Division One.

In an even start to the game, the first chance fell to Man United but it was easily dealt with by Maddie Elbro in the Wolves goal. Wolves grew into the game and firmly got themselves on the front foot but were unable to make all of their pressure count until Anna Morphet gave them the lead on the stroke of half-time. She stepped up and hammered in a free-kick from around 25 yards into the top corner.

The goal came after Natalie Widdal headed over from a corner and Billie Haynes drew a good save out of the Man United goalkeeper from a well-struck volley.

The second-half followed the same fashion as the first, with Wolves being the dominant team and creating most of the goal scoring chances. Despite having much of the ball, Wolves were struggling to create a clear goal scoring chance, that was until Jen Anslow doubled the hosts’ lead.

A well worked move by Widdle, Criddle and Whetton saw the latter’s cross fall to the feet of Anslow, her first shot was well saved by the Man United goalkeeper but she was on hand to tap in the rebound and put Wolves 2-0 up. Wolves’ dominance was soon emphasised further when Morphet’s free kick from the left was headed in at the back post by Courtney Jones.

Wolves Women manager Dan McNamara said: ‘’ Tonight was a fantastic occasion for the club. To play any Manchester United team is always special. The girls picked up where we left off on Sunday. I thought we were excellent and it shows how far we’ve come over pre-season. Thanks to all the supporters who came to the game. Hopefully we will see more of you during the season.

Their lead was short-lived as Feds got the equaliser in the 47th minute. Wolves’ defence failed to clear a header into the box and the ball was volleyed into the roof of the net. Both teams had chances to go ahead with Feds going closest and hitting the post, but it was Wolves who restored their lead in the 54th minute after Lowri Walker took the ball into the box and slotted it past the keeper.

In the 57th minute Mumford made an excellent save, but Feds scored from the resulting corner to make it 2-2. Wolves were back in front again just a minute later when Anslow’s looping effort dipped just over the Feds keeper.

In the 64th minute an injury to Mumford saw her replaced by Courtney Jones in the Wolves goal.

The final 15 minutes saw Manager Dan McNamara freshen up the game with several substitutes, with new additions Criddle, Hargreaves and Edge all having chances. Feds were also pressing, but Wolves were able to hold on for their victory.

Manager Dan McNamara said: “I thought it was a fantastic win. It epitomises everything I’m trying to bring to the club – togetherness, determination, hard work and character against a very good Liverpool Feds side. I knew it would be tough as they’re a very physical side and I’m absolutely delighted with the way the girls have performed today.

“My big aim at the end of last season was to keep the majority of the squad together, which we’ve done. I’ve also brought in a few individuals and they’ve really gelled. It was a challenging pre-season, and I think we’ve really gathered momentum to take forward into next week’s match.”

Match Report

Wolves Women rounded off their pre-season campaign with a 3-2 victory over Liverpool Feds at Bilston Town.

The first chance of the game fell to Liverpool Feds in the opening minute, but the header was saved by Maddison Mumford in the Wolves goal. Wolves were quick to reply, with Jess Jennings shooting just wide. The home side started to dominate, creating most of the chances, with Jen Anslow and Chloe Williams going close, but they had to wait until the 43rd minute to make the breakthrough. It came from a free-kick from the edge of the box as Anna Morphet curled the ball into the net to send Wolves into the break 1-0 up.

Match Report

Wolves Women got their FA Women’s National League season off to a flyer as they ran out 11-0 winners over Steel City Wanderers at St. George’s Park in Sheffield. Four goals from Lowri Walker, a brace apiece from Billie Haynes and Jess Jennings, as well as goals from Jen Anslow, Chloe Williams and an own goal secured an emphatic victory for Wolves.

A bright start by the away side saw them take the lead within three minutes, a wonderful attacking move finished with Tammi George’s ball into the area being turned into the back of her own net by a Steel City defender. Wolves were then three up within minutes. Lowri Walker grabbed her first of the game with a lofted finish over Johnson in the Steel City goal before Chloe Williams extended Wolves’ lead further.

The away side continued to show their dominance and went close to adding to their lead, first through Jess Jennings and then through Billie Haynes but both were unable to beat Steel City’s Johnson. However, Wolves soon made it four through Jennings and then Walker made it five, getting her second goal of the game with a powerful strike off the underside of the crossbar.

The second-half followed a similar fashion to the first, with Wolves making all the running and they were soon 6-0 in front, Walker finishing well to grab her hat-trick. Wolves continued to dominate and went close time and time again before Jennings got her second of the game and Wolves’ seventh. Anslow then got in on the act, finishing from close range to make it 8-0. Walker added to her hat-trick by netting a fourth before Haynes grabbed a brace with two well taken goals to put Wolves 11-0 up.

Wolves manager Daniel McNamara said: "I thought the girls were fantastic. We were on it from the first minute and that showed from us taking the lead so early. I thought the players were excellent and managed the game well. "We go into the next game exactly as we did today. We’ll maintain our professionalism and attitude and hope to get all 3 points.’’

Match Report

Wolves Women remain unbeaten in Midlands Division One after their 7-0 win over Solihull Moors Ladies at a rainy Bilston Town. With braces from Billie Haynes and Jen Anslow, Wolves' goal tally is already up to 18 in just their first two games of the season.

Solihull Moors (H).jpg

36 page issue - 210 x 150 in size - cost £1.00

The game started with some controversy after the Moors goalkeeper Samantha Abbott handled the ball outside the area. With no cards shown and Wolves manager Dan McNamara showing a little frustration on the sideline, it was up to Anna Morphet to capitalise on the early opportunity, but her second minute free kick from 20 yards out, smashed against the crossbar.

Despite Wolves continuously testing Moors' defence, it wasn't until the 30th minute that they were able to take the lead. Captain Natalie Widdal’s cross-cum-shot from 30 yards out  looped over Abbott's head and into the bottom left corner. The home team now had the confidence they needed to continue to dominate. It took them just seven minutes to double their lead through Morphet who got a second chance with another free kick in an almost identical spot to the first. This time she was able to place it in the bottom left-hand corner and the Moors’ goalkeeper couldn't do anything to stop it.

Manager McNamara must have given the girls some encouraging words at half time as it took just four minutes for Billie Haynes to pick up a rebounded shot and score their third of the match. Just two minutes after that Chloe Williams added her name to the score sheet as she was able to head a corner into the back of the net.

As time went on the visitors became more frustrated and continued to struggle to penetrate Wolves’ defence, while the home side continued to push for more goals. Haynes bagged her second of the game in the 61st minute, followed by Anslow in the 72nd, with both instances showing how strong and powerful the Wolves Women strikers were, with keeper Abbott unable to stop almost any shot that was on target.

The Birmingham visitors showed some signs of life towards the end of the game but were not able to achieve a consolation goal before the full time whistle was blown.

Manager Dan McNamara said: “Solihull looked very much to sit behind the ball, so we had to be patient. Some teams are going to do that this season because they know our quality so it's just about being patient, keep probing and the quality will show. We've just got to keep building and preparing for each game, we can't underestimate anyone in this league.”

Match Report

Wolves Women progressed in the FA Women’s National League Cup after a 1-0 win over Crewe Alexandra Ladies. An early Jade Cross strike was enough to help Wolves over the line in what was a hard-fought encounter at Bilston Town.

After an impressive start to the league season in which they have scored 18 goals, the home side found it hard to take their chances, despite taking an early lead. Charlotte Criddle played a cute ball around the corner into the path of Jade Cross, who beat the offside trap, before rounding the Crewe goalkeeper and putting Wolves in the lead.

Crewe (LC) (H).jpg

36 page issue - 210 x 150 in size - cost £1.00

Crewe then went close twice themselves, first the attacker just couldn’t get a toe to the ball and then cracked a strike off the inside of the post. With Wolves trying to see the game out, the second-half failed to present many clear-cut chances until Jade Cross almost doubled the hosts’ lead with a half-volley which she could only hit over the bar.

Criddle then went close with an effort from distance in the dying embers of the game. Despite their inability to extend the lead after an early goal, Wolves were able to hold onto the win and put themselves into the next round.

     MOMENT OF THE MATCH:

In what was a game that lacked many clear-cut chances, Jade Cross’s goal for Wolves was a display of what the hosts can do when they’re on the top of their game. From Criddle’s through ball to Cross’s perfectly timed run and rounding the goalkeeper, it was a goal worthy of winning any football match.

     QUOTES:

Despite seeing his side win, Wolves manager Dan McNamara felt his side didn’t perform to their full potential.

He said: ‘’I don’t think we really got to the races today. It was difficult, it was hot, the pitch wasn’t ideal but I’m not making any excuses, I think we struggled from the off.

‘’Once the first goal went in I thought the game would open up a bit. Credit to Crewe, they defended for their lives.’’

Match Report

Wolves Women secured their third consecutive league win, continuing their unbeaten start to the season with a 3-1 victory over Birmingham and West Midlands Ladies at Castle Vale Stadium.

programme details unknown

Wolves got off to a great start, going ahead in the third minute as Lowri Walker headed home. It wasn’t long before they doubled their lead after the ball was played through to Jade Cross, she beat the offside trap and rounded the keeper, slotting it into an empty net.

Wolves continued to press, with Cross shooting wide, and Morphet sending her free kick just over the bar. Their dominance paid off in the 25th minute when a through ball found Chloe Williams, who thundered her shot past the keeper to put the visitors 3-0 up. Both teams were creating chances, with Williams going closest for Wolves who went in at the break with a 3-0 lead.

Birmingham and West Midlands Ladies got themselves back into the game in the second half, creating most of the chances and repeatedly testing the Wolves’ defence. They hosts hit the bar twice and netted a deserved goal in the 78th minute after a defensive mistake allowed Fisher to take her opportunity and slot the ball into the bottom corner to make it 1-3.

Despite their pressure, Birmingham and West Midlands failed to break down the Wolves defence again and the visitors held on to take all 3 points.

     MOMENT OF THE MATCH

In a game which featured three different goal scorers for Wolves it was Williams’ goal which stood out as she took a touch to control the ball in the box and thunder her shot past the keeper.

     QUOTES

With Wolves securing their third consecutive league victory, manager Dan McNamara was pleased with the performance. He said:“I thought it was a really professional performance today. We studied Birmingham and West Midlands and knew what they were going to bring. I thought we dealt with it very well. "In the first half I thought we really came out of the traps and caused them problems, and it could have been over by half time. "In the second half we didn’t really get going, but overall it was good to get three points and we are still top of the league after our first big challenge.”

Match Report

Wolves Women continued their winning streak with a 4-1 win over Burton Albion Ladies. Goals from Anna Morphet, Mai Butler, Lowrie Walker and Jade Cross saw the Wolfettes reign supreme and they are yet to be beaten so far this season.

programme details unknown

Morphet's fast drive into the final third oozed with confidence which was then reflected by a shot from 20 yards out which floated over Burton keeper Emily Wragg's head for the first goal. Burton were quick to respond as a corner just five minutes later gave Jamie-Leigh Fowler a clear header which she dispatched cleanly into the bottom-right corner for the equaliser.

Wolves edged ahead again in the 26th minute as Mai Butler headed home from a Morphet corner. Both sides continued to battle hard, each having ample opportunities to score but Burton were unable to find a second equalising goal before the half-time whistle was blown.

It took Wolves just six minutes in the second half to find a third after Burton keeper Wraggs was lobbed again, but this time by Lowri Walker. A power shot from Jade Cross from the 18-yard line was too difficult for Wraggs to keep out of the back of the net, making it 4-1 to Wolves in the 63rd minute.

For the majority of the second half the Brewers struggled to get out of their own half at times but Wolves weren't able to capitalise on the opportunities they were creating for themselves. The game came to an abrupt stop with just under ten minutes left to play after a clash of heads between Burton’s Hayley Sutton and Wolves’ Mai Butler which forced both players off. Unfortunately for the home team, they had no more players on the bench, so had no choice but to see out the game with only 10 players.

     QUOTES:

After the game Wolves manager Dan McNamara felt his side could have done better. He said: “There  were little things, little disappointments for me, again it seems to be a reoccurring thing of not putting the ball in the back of the net. I thought we could have scored more if we had a little more composure. "You always come to Burton and get a well organised side, but I think our quality sort of shone through. That's two goals we've conceded so far this season, if we carry on with that stat I will be very happy.

Match Report

Wolves Women picked up their second win in a week as they overcame Sporting Khalsa Women 10-2 on Wednesday evening. Four goals from Jade Cross, a brace for Billie Haynes as well as goals from Charlotte Wilkie, Jen Anslow, Anna Morphet and Lowri Walker helped Wolves to an emphatic victory which put them joint top of the FA Women’s National League Division One.

Wolves got off to a blistering start and found themselves two-nil up within the first five minutes. Jade Cross went close to opening the scoring, but her effort was saved by Toni Parkes in the Khalsa goal, however Haynes was on hand to tap the ball in. Cross then got her first goal of the game just minutes later, she latched onto a through-ball from Walker, rounded the goalkeeper and slotted the ball home to double Wolves’ lead. She soon doubled her goal tally and extended Wolves’ lead further, getting on the end of a Natalie Widdal free kick.

The dangerous Cross completed her first-half hat-trick with a perfectly weighted lob over Parkes, this coming after Haynes had grabbed her second goal of the game and Khalsa had got their first. The hosts then managed to get a second to bring the score to 5-2 but Wilkie tapped the ball in on the stroke of half-time to ensure Wolves had a four-goal cushion at the break.

After a frantic first-half, the second-half began somewhat quieter and it took until the hour mark before there was another goal, Anslow firing a shot from 30 yards out past the goalkeeper. With the win all but confirmed, Wolves continued to apply the pressure on the Khalsa defence and were rewarded with three more goals in the final 20 minutes. Morphet tucked home a penalty and Walker got in on the act with a drive from the edge of the area. The emphatic victory was then rounded off as Cross grabbed her fourth goal of the game after being teed up by Anslow.

     MOMENT OF THE MATCH:

It’s not every game you manage to score a hat-trick, but to score one in the first-half of a game is extra special. Jade Cross’s hat-trick was well taken, as were all of her four goals, and it emphasised Wolves’ superiority in this game. No doubt she will be looking to continue her goalscoring run after getting seven in her last two.

     QUOTES:

Wolves manager Dan McNamara was delighted with his team’s performance: ‘’I thought the girls were outstanding. I said to them before the game that a result like this has been coming.

‘’The last few weeks I don’t think we’ve been at our best, however tonight, bar a few moments of complacency, I thought they were fantastic.’’

Match Report

Wolves Women continued their fine start to the season as they progressed into the next round of the SSE Women’s FA Cup after a 6-0 win over Kingfisher FC. First-half goals from Billie Haynes, Charlotte Criddle and a brace from Lowri Walker put Wolves in complete control at half-time. They then added to that lead in the second 45, with substitute Charlotte Wilkie and Anna Morphet sealing the rout.

After a confident start to the game, Wolves took the lead with 14 minutes on the clock. Haynes raced through on goal after a lovely through ball by Criddle and fired Wolves ahead. It didn’t take Wolves long to extend their advantage. After a short goal-kick, the hosts won the ball high, allowing Walker to fire into the top corner from the edge of the area.

Moments later it was three. Walker doubled her tally, sweeping the ball home to give Wolves a three-goal lead after just 30 minutes. It was soon four, with Criddle getting in on the act as she headed home Morphet’s corner eight minutes before the interval.

The second half brought more Wolves pressure, but they had to wait until the 68th minute to add to their lead. Substitute Wilkie fired the ball home from close range after it ricocheted in the area, to grab her second goal in as many games. With six minutes remaining Wolves scored their sixth and final goal as Morphet’s cross found its way into the net after neat play from a short corner. That proved to be the final action of the match, with Wolves claiming a deserved win to move safely into the next round of the competition.

     MOMENT OF THE MATCH:

With Kingfisher defending in numbers, the first goal was always going to prove crucial in getting Wolves on their way. It took a fine piece of skill and vision from Criddle to open up the Kingfisher backline, with Haynes providing the telling finish.

     QUOTES:

Wolves manager Dan McNamara was delighted with his side’s showing. He said: “A clean sheet and into the next round of the FA Cup – that was one of the massive positives to take from today. As a player, I always loved to play in the FA Cup and as a manager, it’s no different, it’s a special competition.”

Match Report

Wolves Women continued their perfect start in the FA Women’s National League Midlands Division One with a 3-0 victory against Nettleham Ladies at the CKW Stadium. Goals from Natalie Widdal, Jade Cross and Tammi George earned Dan McNamara’s side a comfortable victory to extend their winning run to eight games in all competitions.

The hosts enjoyed the majority of the possession in the game’s early stages, but Lucy Farrow’s dangerous cross, which was almost met by Abbie Murrell, was a timely reminder of Brad Wright’s Nettleham’s strength on the counter. As the half progressed Wolves continued to dominate and create chances - Cross saw an excellent shot from distance well saved by the visitors’ goalkeeper, Kelsey Fletcher.

Soon after, though, McNamara’s side went ahead when captain Widdal was the quickest to react as Nettleham failed to clear Anslow’s corner to score from inside the six-yard box. Wolves continued on top and just before half-time, Cross turned in Charlotte Wilkie’s centre to double their lead.

Wolves were the stronger side but the visitors posed a threat when counter-attacking. Maddie Elbro saved well from Murrell, who was clean through on goal. Wolves responded well; George made it 3-0 by converting Andrea Barnett’s cross with her first touch of the game, after coming on for Billie Haynes in attack. The striker saw her header hit the upright late on as Wolves created chances, aided by substitute Charlotte Criddle’s excellent hold-up play, until the final whistle.

     MOMENT OF THE MATCH

After a period of sustained pressure, Widdal’s calm finish on the half hour to put Wolves in front settled any nerves and the hosts continued to dominate, playing excellent, free-flowing football from then on.

     QUOTES

McNamara was delighted with his side's performance. He said: “I'm really pleased, that win has taken us above West Brom and top of the league. “They were patient today and played really well against a good Nettleham team, but we didn't expect any different from them.

“We have a strong squad, we had a player drop out today and had someone to fill their spot and whenever anyone comes in there isn't a drop in quality.”

Wolves started well and had an early chance as Criddle’s free kick was cleared by the defence, but only as far as Andrea Barnett, who fired her shot just wide of the post. Wolves’ first corner was taken by Jen Anslow, but resulted in a free kick to TNS after an infringement in the box.

The home side continued to create chances, with Lowri Walker, Jade Cross and Tanya Dickinson all going close.

The pressure finally paid off in the 39th minute as Jade Cross slotted the ball past the keeper after good work from Criddle to give Wolves a deserved lead. Just four minutes later they doubled their lead as a cross from Anslow was deflected into the TNS net by a defender after pressure from Jade Cross, sending Wolves in at the break two goals up.

Wolves kept up their pressure in the second half, and found their third goal in the 69th minute as Criddle’s 30-yard effort thundered past the keeper. Wolves were well in control, with chances for Walker, Anslow and substitutes Chantelle Teare and Jess Jennings, but TNS defended well and the home side were happy to settle for a 3-0 win.

Wolves soon made their dominance count in the early stages of the second-half when Walker played in Jade Cross, who proceede to lob the ball over the goalkeeper from the edge of the area. The away side kept pushing and were soon rewarded for their efforts when they doubled the lead. Jade Cross was involved once again, this time turning provider for Chloe Shirley who was able to prod the ball home from close range.

Match Report

Wolves Women’s run in the FA Women’s National League Cup came to an end as they were beaten 4-1 by Sunderland Ladies in the Second Round. First-half goals from Emily Hutchinson and Anna Young put the away side in control at the break, before own goals from Natalie Widdal and Emma Cross sealed the win after the interval. Wolves pulled a goal back through substitute Charlotte Criddle to reduce the arrears, but it proved too little too late.

Despite a strong start from Wolves, Sunderland took the lead with their first attack after five minutes. Jordan Atkinson burst down the right wing, and her cross picked out Hutchinson who couldn’t miss from a few yards out.

The hosts came back strongly following that early blow but failed to make their possession count in the way of clear-cut chances. They then paid the price as Sunderland grabbed their second, 20 minutes after their first. Nice build up around the area saw the ball fed to Young and she fired in at the near post to double the visitors’ advantage.

Ten minutes into the second half, Sunderland all but sealed their win with a third goal. Atkinson fizzed in another fantastic cross from the right, that was inadvertently turned in by Wolves’ captain Widdal for an own goal. Wolves again were victims to their own downfall, with another own goal, nine minutes later. This time it was Hutchinson’s cross that cruelly deflected off Cross and diverted the ball past the goalkeeper.

The hosts pulled a deserved goal back with 19 minutes remaining as Criddle rose highest to head home from a corner. However, that proved to be the last action of the game with Wolves unable to mount a comeback.

     MOMENT OF THE MATCH:

It was a tough afternoon for Wolves, which got off to the worst possible start. Despite looking bright in the opening exchanges, they conceded after just five minutes which set the tone for the afternoon.

     QUOTES:

Despite the 4-1 scoreline, Wolves manager Dan McNamara was pleased with his side’s effort. He said: “I thought we gave them too much respect in the first half and by the time we started to play we were a couple of goals behind. Then we started to grow into the game. “We’ve got to take the positives from it. It shows the level to the young girls and that’s the quality and levels we strive to be at. “It was 4-1, I’ve seen bigger score lines from them throughout this season so we can’t be too disheartened by that. They (Sunderland) are a fantastic outfit and they’ve got some great players.”

Match Report

Wolves Women fell to their first defeat of the season as they were beaten 2-1 by Bedworth United Ladies on Sunday. Jade Cross grabbed herself a goal in between two strikes from the home side but it wasn’t enough to help Wolves take something from the game.

Programme Details Unknown.jpg

details unknown

In what was a fairly even contest, both sides had chances to open the scoring early on but to no avail. Jade Cross and Billie Haynes went closest for the visitors but were unable to break the deadlock. Bedworth then took the lead from a corner, which had come from a good save from Katie Clarke. The ball fell in the area and was bundled in by Alice Belcher to put the home side in front.

Both teams continued to trade shot-for-shot and Wolves were finally able to find a breakthrough of their own. Andrea Barnett’s mazy dribble ended with her laying the ball off to Cross, who fired across the Bedworth goalkeeper and into the back of the net, right on the stroke of half-time.

Wolves started the second half the better of the two teams and had chances to put themselves in front. Lowri Walker and Cross again had chances but couldn’t make them count. Bedworth then had a chance to retake the lead from the penalty spot. Chloe Williams brought down a Bedworth player in the box but the resulting penalty was fantastically saved by Katie Clarke in the Wolves goal.

The visitors were looking like they were going to get at least a point until a late free kick into the box fell to Kirsty Farnsworth who slotted home to give Bedworth all three points.

     MOMENT OF THE MATCH:

Katie Clarke’s penalty save at 1-1 looked like it might be enough to help Wolves get something from the game, but sadly it wasn’t to be. However, it was big moment at an important part of the game and Wolves, and certainly Clarke, will definitely feel hard done by that they couldn’t take at least a point.

     QUOTES:

Wolves manager Dan McNamara was disappointed with the manner of his side’s defeat. He said: ‘’It’s difficult to take a last-minute goal. We really lacked quality in the final third today and we’ve paid the ultimate price. The girls are hurting and I’m hurting at the minute, it’s a difficult one to take. We just have to bounce back.’’

Match Report

A Billie Haynes wonder goal helped kick start a comfortable afternoon for Wolves Women as they beat Kidderminster Harries Ladies 6-1 in the SSE Women’s FA Cup.

An onslaught of Wolves pressure finally paid off as they took the lead in the 28th minute through a Billie Haynes long range effort which flew past the keeper. That was the winger’s first goal since Wolves’ 6-0 win over Kingfisher in late September.

Wolves got their second nine minutes into the second half when some good pressure from Jade Cross set free her strike partner Andrea Barnett who had the composure to slot past the keeper. Four minutes later Anna Price added a third after the ball fell nicely to her on the 18 yard line. Her powerful effort nestled nicely into the top corner.

Haynes nearly scored another long range goal after her curling effort from the right was pushed over the bar, this time by the Kidderminster keeper. Substitute Jess Jennings then made it four with 13 minutes to go as Cross registered another assist for a simple tap in for the striker. She grabbed her second following a rebounded effort off the bar which she slotted under the keeper.

A Wolves clean sheet looked to be on the cards, but was cancelled out with five minutes to play following a fantastic free kick from Kidderminster’s number nine Amber Lawrence. Other sub Nyah Edwards grabbed Wolves’ sixth and final goal - a well-placed finish into the bottom corner.

     MOMENT OF THE MATCH:

This was Haynes’ opener without a doubt. Her left footed strike from 30 yards looked destined for the back of the net as soon as it left her foot. It came at the perfect time for Wolves as they were unlucky not to be in front prior to the goal.

     QUOTES:

Manager Dan McNamara was pleased with the impact of his substitutions. He said: “We spoke about what the subs can bring when they do feature and Jess [Jennings] has been asking me what she needs to do to get into the squad and she’s come on and done fantastically scoring two goals.”

Match Report

Wolves Women’s Birmingham County Cup journey ended at the hands of Coventry United Ladies as they were beaten 5-1 in Daventry on Sunday. A 34th minute goal from Jade Cross wasn’t enough to create a comeback for Wolves who have seen their cup run come to an abrupt end.

The game opened in what seemed a very equal contest with both sides applying pressure, but nothing resulted from the chances created. Coventry claimed the first goal 16 minutes in to the match. Shannon O’Brien sent a looping shot from just inside the 18-yard box over Katie Clarke in the Wolves goal.

Less than 10 minutes later a penalty was awarded to United, which saw Chenise Austin double their lead. Coventry continued to press and made Lois Jefferies made it 3-0 in the 33rd minute, heading in an O’Brien cross.

Wolves’ goal came just a minute later with a great run down the wing from Jen Anslow. Her perfectly timed ball found Jade Cross, who neatly slotted home. But this wasn’t quite enough to create a comeback, as just minutes later Marie Gauntlett provided a wonder goal, chipping one over Clarke, increasing United’s lead.

The second half saw Wolves manager Dan McNamara bring on five substitutes. The fresh players weren’t enough though as Wolves struggled to pull off a comeback. The final goal of the game came from Jefferies, adding her name to the scoresheet once again with a fine effort it into the top right corner.

     MOMENT OF THE MATCH

Anslow and Cross’s 1-2 teamwork to create Wolves’ goal looked like they could have been on for the comeback from 3-0 down, but it wasn’t to be. The movement forward provided hope for the team.

     QUOTES

Wolves manager Dan McNamara was disappointed with the loss but praised Coventry’s clinical nature. He said: “I’m massively disappointed. I’m disappointed to go out of the cup but obviously they are a fantastic side. “I thought we started brilliantly. The first 15 or 16 minutes I thought we were excellent and posing some threats up there, but obviously Coventry got a few chances and that’s the difference. They’re clinical in front of goal and all of sudden we end up 3-1 down.”

Match Report

Wolves Women were knocked out of the SSE Women’s FA Cup after a second round 4-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers Ladies at the CKW Stadium on Sunday. Despite a battling performance from Wolves, first-half goals from Bethany Donoghue, Alex Taylor and an own goal, couple with a second-half strike courtesy of Jess Holbrook sent Blackburn through to the third round.

Blackburn (WFAC) (H).jpg

44 page issue - 210 x 145 in size - cost £2.00

The hosts went the closest to opening the scoring through Jade Cross but were denied by a terrific save from Danielle Gibbons in the Blackburn goal. A cross from the right was met by Cross merely yards out from the goal but Gibbons reacted well to tip it behind. Blackburn started to pile on the pressure and took the lead not long after the half-hour mark. Lagan Makin’s initial strike looped up over Katie Clarke in the Wolves goal, cannoned back off the crossbar but fell to the feet of Donoghue who was on hand to tap the ball in.

The visitors soon doubled their lead through Taylor. Makin was again involved as her cross found the head of Taylor and she headed home. Just before the half-time break Blackburn’s lead was increased even further. Taylor’s ball over the top found Natasha Flint and she struck a volley off the post which was deemed to be turned in by Natalie Widdal. The ball was judged to have crossed the line despite the appeals of the Wolves defenders.

The second-half was evenly contested, and Wolves had chances to try and get themselves back in the game through Jade Cross and Lowri Walker, but both were unable to take their chances. Blackburn then put the game beyond doubt as Holbrook’s strike from outside the area found the bottom corner of the goal, beyond Clarke.

       MOMENT OF THE MATCH

The goal just before the stroke of half-time sealed the win for Blackburn. Going into the break two goals behind would have given Wolves a slight chance, but three made their task almost impossible.

      QUOTES

Despite the result, manager Dan McNamara had praise for his players. He said: “It’s probably the proudest 4-0 defeat I’ve ever been involved in to be honest. I thought we were tremendous. Again, individual errors probably cost us two or three goals today, but I can’t question the girls – I thought they were absolutely outstanding. “From the first minute to 37 minutes in I thought we were really frustrating them, sticking to the game plan, they were struggling to create chances, and then a little bit of quality which obviously they possess in abundance, and all of a sudden we find ourselves 3-0 down. “But we’ve played the best team in the National League, and I think the girls can be really proud of that and look for a massive performance back in the league next Sunday to finish off the year.”

Match Report

Wolves Women got back to winning ways in the league in impressive style with a 7-0 win over Long Eaton United Ladies at Castlecroft’s CKW Stadium. Goals from Jade Cross, Anna Morphet, Chloe Williams, Billie Haynes and Charlotte Criddle helped the home side maintain their strong league form.

It took just one minute for Wolves to find their first goal of the match as Morphet found Jade Cross, who ran into the box and slotted the ball under Long Eaton goalkeeper Merle Schmid. Cross could have made it two just five minutes later, but the ball was cleared off the line by a Long Eaton defender.

The visitors did well to hold out for the remainder of the first half as Wolves came close with a range of chances. Both teams came out fighting in the second half, but it was Long Eaton who were punished for it after giving away a penalty in the 51st  minute. Morphet slotted the ball home comfortably to get the second of the match.

Wolves were clearly not done yet with scoring goals. Pressing high and with menace, it took the Wanderers just over 15 minutes to find their third. Jade Cross was able to square the ball to Wiliams who sent it over the line. Wolves continued to dominate and their confidence shone through. Substitute Haynes scored two from long range in the space of 3 minutes to make it 5-0 with just under 20 minutes to go.

Jade Cross got her second of the match after her powerful shot from just inside the area was again too much for the Long Eaton keeper to stop. A lovely run from Criddle and great movement going forward allowed her to slot the ball past Schmid, finding Wolves’ seventh and final goal of the game.

     QUOTES:

Manager Dan McNamara was delighted with the result. He said: “I thought the girls were excellent today. We talked beforehand about finishing the year in style after a really tough 2 months. I thought we dominated the game from the first whistle and were unlucky not to add to the 7 great goals we scored. “I thought the subs where fantastic today and really brought something to the game which is what you want from them. After the effort they’ve given in the last 4 months they deserved that. Its sets us up nicely going into the Christmas break and we’ll all enjoy some time with our families now before a big push starting in January.”

Match Report

Wolves Women continued their positive league form as they comfortably eased past Solihull Moors Ladies in their first competitive game in 6 weeks. A brace from Jade Cross and a fine finish from Tammi George was enough to seal the points against a depleted Solihull Moors.

Wolves got off to the perfect start as Cross opened the scoring within five minutes, calmly slotting home on the volley from Chloe Williams’ through ball. Having control on the game throughout, a host of chances fell Wolves’ way as they looked to assert their dominance on the score-line. However, Sam Abbott in the Solihull goal stood firm, making a number of fine saves.

Shortly before the interval George eventually netted Wolves’ deserved second, a fine looped-finish enough to beat the goalkeeper to give the visitors a two-goal lead going into the half-time break.

It was much of the same story in the second period. Cross believed she had her second of the game when finishing past Abbott, but she was made to wait after her effort was ruled out for offside, before substitute Charlotte Criddle also came close with a header which came back off the post.

The pair combined well to eventually net Wolves’ third however. Criddle’s fine ball over the top of Solihull’s backline found Cross through on goal, and on this occasion her goal stood as she poked the ball past Abbott. A well-worked set-piece almost led to Wolves’ fourth, Billie Haynes’ attempt unlucky as her left-footed strike smashed the crossbar. Substitute Jen Anslow’s free header from a corner was sent over as Wolves had to settle for three.

     MOMENT OF THE MATCH:

George’s brilliant lobbed finish to score Wolves’ crucial second goal was the highlight of this game. Coming just before the interval, the fine finish was vital to ensure Wolves had one hand on the game going into the second half.

     QUOTES:

Manager Dan McNamara was pleased with the result, however saw much to improve on regarding his team’s performance, despite the 3-0 victory. He said: “It was a clean sheet and we got the three points which is important, however I thought we were below-par today. We dominated the game as you’d expect, they made it really difficult for us with ten men behind the ball defending for their lives so credit to Solihull. We lacked a bit of quality in certain areas of the field but we turned up on a not-so-great pitch and we got the three points, so we take the positives.”

Match Report

Wolves Women fell to their first league defeat since November as they were beaten 2-0 by West Bromwich Albion Women on Sunday. In what was a feisty top-of-the-table clash, Wolves were unable to take their chances and were beaten courtesy of Keeley Davies and Natalie Murray goals.

Despite the hosts having yet to lose a league game this season, it was Wolves who started the brightest. The first real chance of the game fell to Jade Cross, who struck well from distance only to see her effort parried away by Scarlett Field in the West Brom goal, while Billie Haynes went close to connecting with the rebound.

West Brom (A).jpg

12 page issue - 210 x 145 in size - cost £

Wolves then had a golden chance as Anna Morphet whipped in a free kick and Tammi George was able to get her head on it, but the ball flashed just wide. West Brom began to grow into the game and had a good chance of their own through Harriet James. Her effort came crashing back off the post.

The hosts eventually got the first breakthrough of the game. Wolves failed to deal with a free-kick into the box resulting in a penalty area scramble, before the ball fell to Davies who fired it home on the half volley. George had another good chance to score just before the half-time break but again she could only head over the bar.

Just minutes into the second-half West Brom doubled their lead. Gabbie Reid’s ball into the box found James, she turned and passed to Natalie Murray who slotted home past Katie Clarke in the Wolves goal. Wolves began to pile on the pressure as they looked to get themselves back in the game but were denied a number of times by Field and were unable to find a breakthrough. The result sees Wolves stay second in the table, while West Brom stretch their lead at the top to 6 points.

     MOMENT OF THE MATCH:

The first goal is always key in big games such as this, and it was certainly the case again here. Wolves had started the brightest and with a bit more luck they could have taken the lead themselves. But it wasn’t to be and Davies’ opener for West Brom was a key moment in the game as it meant Wolves were on the backfoot.

     QUOTES:

Manager Dan McNamara was disappointed with the result. He said: “I thought it was a game of two halves; massively disappointing to come away with nothing, especially with how we started the game. I thought we were fantastic and causing them real problems in the first half, and then credit to Albion, we’ve said it all year, we’ve got to take our chances. When you don’t take chances, you always give the opposition an opportunity to score goals, and credit to them, they’ve had four opportunities I think and scored two of them. “We were gaining confidence as the game went on and I think it was just a case of breaking the deadlock, and had we scored, I think the game would have gone in a totally different direction. “But they’ve stayed in the game when we’ve had our 20-minute spells and they’ve come out on top, so no complaints, we’ve just got to learn from the mistakes and move forward.”

The hosts were behind with almost the first attack of the game, just two minutes in. A free kick from the right was swung in and Emily Painter met it sweetly on the volley to fire past Katie Clarke in the Wolves goal and put the visitors in front. Wolves pulled themselves level just minutes later. Chloe Williams’ cross from the right found Charlotte Wilkie who powerfully headed the ball into the net.

The home side continued to pile on the pressure and went close on a number of occasions through Wilkie, Lowri Walker and Barnett. The best chance fell to Williams who exchanged passes with Charlotte Criddle on the edge of the area after some fantastic work down the right wing, but she was denied brilliantly by Shan Turner in the opposition goal.

Despite the promising end to the first-half, Wolves were slow out the blocks after the break and should have been behind again after two minutes, but Stephanie Weston could only head wide from yards out. Birmingham & West Midlands Ladies soon retook the lead through substitute Lauryn Bryan, who tapped the ball in after some good work down the left wing. Wolves pushed hard to get themselves back on level terms but eventually found themselves further behind as Evangeline Gallop fired in from a tight angle and secured all three points for the visitors.

     MOMENT OF THE MATCH:

Charlotte Wilkie’s equalising goal was a huge moment in the first half as it got Wolves back in the game not long after they had fallen behind. It put them back on level terms and enabled them to apply plenty of pressure to Birmingham & West Midlands. It was important that Wolves were not behind for very long after conceding so early in the game.

     QUOTES:

Manager Dan McNamara found the defeat difficult to take. He said: ‘’We’re really disappointed. I’m not too sure what was wrong with us today, we just never got going. I don’t think we created opportunities like we have been doing, we didn’t make chances count. “We’ve got to get ourselves together, put things right ahead of our next game against Burton.”

Match Report

Four goals from Jade Cross paved the way for victory as Wolves Women beat Burton Albion 8-0 at Castlecroft on Sunday. Additional goals from Chloe Williams, Billie Haines and a brace from Jess Jennings saw Wolves dominate the game to return to their winning ways.

Eight minutes in saw Wolves claim the first goal. Cross broke down the defence before beating the keeper to put the ball into the back of the net. Wolves continued to pressure Burton before Cross fired it home, doubling the lead with a powerful effort into the top left corner.

Just five minutes later, Burton’s defence opened up allowing Cross to perfectly time a ball to Williams who was able to control it well before slotting past the keeper. A defensive error from Burton enabled Cross to take full advantage yet again and complete her hat-trick increasing Wolves’ lead.

Wolves went into the second half looking to continue their domination with increasing amounts of pressure. 23 minutes was all that was needed before Cross increased the scoreline once more. A skim through the defence before a one on one with the keeper saw Cross fire it into the bottom left corner.

Five goals were not enough for Jennings who then went on to lob the keeper making it six for the home side. Jennings collected the ball to make a great run before beating the keeper for the second time to slot the ball nicely into the back of the net. The final goal of the game came from substitute Haines who spotted the holes in Burton’s defence to add her name to the scoresheet and round off an impressive win.

     MOMENT OF THE MATCH

Jade Cross’s powerful effort to claim her second goal was the pivotal point in the game which appeared to reveal the dominance that Wolves had.

     QUOTE

Manager Dan McNamara was delighted with the result. He said: “I thought we were fantastic from the start. We came out strong and built on it from there. “The way we moved with the ball was a strength. Burton sat in and we had to be good with the ball; the first goal came from a lovely one-two in the centre of the field and obviously Jade [Cross] was clinical at the other end”.

Wolves began the game on the attack with Jade Cross and with Jess Jennings at the heart of a series of good moves, and Dan McNamara’s side were unlucky not to be in front within the first 10 minutes. The home side finally had their opener on the half-hour mark as captain Anna Price out-jumped her marker to head home at the near post.

Wolves didn’t have to wait too long for their second: five minutes later, Anna Morphet curled an unstoppable free-kick in from 35 yards out. Moments before the break Wolves cemented their impressive first-half performance as Jen Anslow turned in the box and scored to make it 3-0 at half-time.

A scrappy second half seemed to tire Wolves but the chances kept coming. Price and Morphet were unlucky to not add to their first-half strikes. Wolves’ defence stood firm for 75 minutes and looked to be heading for a clean sheet until Nat Morris flicked home an in-swinging corner from a tight angle to make it 3-1.

     MOMENT OF THE MATCH:

Morphet’s free-kick was the stand out moment at a crucial time in the match. Her curling effort from 35 yards left Toni Parkes with no chance.

     QUOTES:

Manager McNamara was particularly happy with his side’s ruthless streak in the first half. He said: “It was definitely a game of two halves. The first we were patient in our play, and took our chances when they came. We moved the ball well. “From the first half alone, I think we thoroughly deserved the three points.”

Match Report

Wolves Women eased to a comfortable victory over The New Saints at a windswept Park Hall on Wednesday evening. Jade Cross netted her third hat-trick of the season with Tammi George grabbing the other goal in a 4-0 win.

Wolves were quick on the offensive and had the first opportunity of the game, Jade Cross hitting the foot of the post in only the third minute. Saints responded and Emily Ridge had their first sight of goal on the ten minute mark but she put her effort well wide.

The home side were playing a well marshalled offside trap with Wolves falling foul of the tactics a number of times. The deadlock was broken midway through the first half as Natalie Widdal threaded a diagonal ball through the middle of the home defence for Jade Cross to run on to. Beating the defender to the ball she lifted it over the onrushing home ‘keeper into the unguarded net.

Wolves were now well on the front foot with Tanya Dickinson striking a 35 yard effort just wide on the half hour and Jade Cross then having an effort cleared off the line. The second goal soon arrived as Jen Anslow swung over a free-kick from near the corner flag, the ball flicked off the head of a Saints defender leaving Tammi George a free header at the back post which she nodded into the back of the net.

The second half began in a similar fashion to the first with Wolves straight on the attack, Jade Cross hitting an angled drive just over the bar. The third goal came after 54 minutes when Jess Jennings played the ball back to Mai Butler who’s first time cross was nodded into the top corner by Jade Cross.

Jade Cross almost grabbed her hat-trick on the hour mark after good work by Chloe Williams saw Cross’s first time effort well saved by Parkes in the Saints goal. The home side responded well and Katie Clarke was called into action for the first, and only time, when saving from Ridge.

The final goal came from a quick break from defence. TNS launched a free kick into the Wolves box which was cleared, substitute Charlotte Criddle fed Jess Jennings who ran fully 40 yards with the ball before slotting an excellent pass into the path of Jade Cross who slid the ball under the advancing goalkeeper and into the net.

The game was now over as a contest, however, Wolves finished the contest with ten players after Nat Widdal was sent off for kicking the ball away and collecting here second yellow of the game. All-in-all it was a fine performance from Wolves who collected all three points to reinforce their second place in the table.

     MOMENT OF THE MATCH

Tammi George’s third goal of the season eased Wolves into a two goal half time lead and removed any nagging doubts that the home side would mount a fightback.

Match Report

Jade Cross scored the only goal of the game as a largely frustrated Wolves side beat Long Eaton United 1-0

It was a steady start with both teams trying to gain momentum in the early exchanges, but it was Jade Cross who had the first real chance for Wolves, but she could not direct her effort on target. Billie Haynes also caused havoc down the left, which almost resulted in a goal mid-way through the half. Her crosses set up multiple chances, but the Long Eaton keeper did well to keep the visitors at bay.

Programme Details Unknown.jpg

In the second half Wolves started much the better team and got the opening goal only five minutes in. A scramble in the box gave Jade Cross the opportunity to slot the ball into the back of the net and finally get the breakthrough they deserved. Wolves came close to a second just minutes later but Tammi George’s header just went wide from a corner. The Wolves defence then stood firm to see out the rest of the game and confirm the win.

     MOMENT OF THE MATCH:

Jade Cross’s goal broke the deadlock for Wolves and proved to be the winner as they saw out the 1-0 victory.

     QUOTES:

Manager Dan McNamara was pleased with his side earning the three points in difficult conditions. He said: “It was a tough one today; it’s obviously a difficult place to come. “We said at half time we are going to have to find a little bit of quality to break them down and I think we did in the end, but from then on in it was just a battle and a slog on a difficult pitch with a difficult wind in our face, but I’m proud of the girls.”

Match Report

Wolves Women extended their winning run to five games with an 11-0 victory over  Steel City Wanderers at the Paycare Ground. A hat-trick from Tammi George, a brace from Jade Cross and goals from Katie Johnson, Andrea Barnett, Hollie Hogan, Jen Anslow, Charlotte Wilkie and Billie Haynes helped Wolves to the emphatic victory over a depleted Steel City side.

It took Wolves just five minutes to take the lead and for debutant Katie Johnson open her goalscoring account. The ball bounced up and she looped a half-volley over the Steel City goalkeeper from around 25 yards out. The early onslaught continued, and the hosts soon found themselves 3-0 up in a matter of minutes. A mix-up between the Steel City defenders and goalkeeper presented the ball to Barnett who made no mistake in firing home from yards out. Hogan then got Wolves’ third, rising highest to head home Anslow’s corner.

George soon got in on the goalscoring act, she ran onto Johnson’s ball over the top to smash a half-volley off the crossbar and in. There was no let-up from Wolves despite the comfortable score-line and Anslow looped a shot over the goalkeeper from outside the area to put Wolves 5-0 up. The former then got another two goals, putting Wolves 7-0 up and scoring a quick-fire hat-trick in the process. Just before the half-time whistle, Wilkie got Wolves’ eighth, hitting a powerful strike into the top corner from around 30 yards out.

The second half was just three minutes old when Wolves made it 9-0, this time Jade Cross tapped a square ball into an empty net to get her first of the game. She then teed up substitute Haynes in similar fashion and Haynes made it ten. Barnett capitalised on a mistake by Johnson in the Steel City goal, stealing the ball before laying it off for Cross to score and grab her second and Wolves’ 11th, rounding off the scoring.

      MOMENT OF THE MATCH:

Scoring on a debut is special for any player, but to do so after just five minutes with a goal as good Katie Johnson’s will take some beating. A 25-yard sweetly struck half-volley had everyone on their feet. What a moment for her personally and for everyone involved with the club’s Regional Talent Centre.

     QUOTES

Wolves boss Dan McNamara felt his side could have done better despite the emphatic victory. He said: ‘’It was a difficult one really. We created upwards of 60 chances, so our goal return isn’t good enough, we just weren’t clinical and I think that’s the story of the season. It’s cost us time and time again so its something we’re going to have to work on in the summer.’’

Match Report

Wolves won their sixth match on the bounce in emphatic style as they hit Bedworth United Ladies for nine at the CKW Stadium. Braces from Anna Morphet, Billie Haynes and Jen Anslow and solo efforts from Tammi George, Anna Price and Jess Jennings provided the hosts with a convincing three points.

It was the perfect start from Wolves, taking the lead inside the opening 10 minutes in style. Tammi George sent Jennings racing with an excellent through pass, before a well-executed pull back in the path of Anna Morphet who fired home confidently past Bell to give The home side an early lead. Bedworth were soon level however. On the twenty-minute mark Kirsty Farnsworth picked out Xena Dhillon who had time and space to slot past Elbro to equalise.

The goal seemed to click Wolves into gear, going on to produce a stunning ten minutes of football which left the visitors bewildered with little answer.. Dan McNamara’s side looked like scoring every time they went forward, and in this spell, they did! Billie Haynes originally got Wolves back in front with an effort from the right which trickled past the goalkeeper, before an adjudged handball inside the penalty area a minute later presented Morphet with the opportunity to get her second of the afternoon; an opportunity she took, firing to the right of goalkeeper Bell.

A stunning drive on the edge of the area from Jen Anslow zipped past Bell shortly after to make it four, before Haynes registered a brace of her own, striking fiercely at the near-post from close range, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance. The pick of the bunch came four minutes before the half-time whistle, a scintillating team move which began from the back, as Haynes turned provider on this occasion, picking out Jess Jennings at the back post to round off a terrific half nicely with number six.

Wolves picked up where they left off in the second period, excellent set-piece deliveries from Morphet found first George and then minutes later, Price to both respectively nod home. With 15 minutes remaining, Anslow netted her second and Wolves’ ninth, rolling her marker before finishing emphatically past Bell to sign off a convincing display.

     MOMENT OF THE MATCH:

There were plenty of brilliant highlights from the game, however Wolves’ sixth goal was a terrific example of what the team have been working on under McNamara. A sweeping move from back to front was put away by Jennings at the back post to put the icing on a fantastic first-half display.

     QUOTES:

Manager Dan McNamara was delighted with his side’s display. He said: “I thought we were outstanding today. That was probably one of the outstanding performances of the season. “We had a point to prove against Bedworth who caused us problems earlier in the season, but I thought we were superb from the off and caused them all sorts of problems. “We want to finish strongly; we’ve had a lot of success this year but we haven’t been able to achieve what we wanted ultimately. We’ve got two tough fixtures to come and we’re looking to end well before we prepare for next season.”

Match Report

Wolves Women started slowly in their penultimate league game away at Nettleham Ladies FC, but built up to an impressive finish with a hat trick for substitute Jade Cross and the final 3 goals coming in the space of 4 minutes to round off an impressive 0-6 away win.

The visitors were putting on plenty of pressure in the first half but their first shot on target didn’t come until the 25th minute when Jess Jennings’ shot from the edge of the area was saved by the Nettleham keeper. Billie Haynes came close twice – first sending her shot over the bar in the 31st minute before almost breaking through on goal a minute later, but she was adjudged to have fouled in the area.

Wolves’ pressure finally paid off in the 37th minute as Morphet’s free-kick bounced around in the area before being driven home by Captain Anna Price to put the visitors ahead at the break. The second half started with a chance for Wolves, with Jennings putting Andrea Barnett through, but she was caught offside. The resulting free-kick ended with a corner for Nettleham which was headed away by Price but came in again, only to be gathered by Maddie Elbro in the Wolves goal.

Wolves continued to press, winning several corners, before Manager Dan McNamara made a double substitution, with Lowri Walker and Jade Cross replacing Andrea Barnett and Jen Anslow. In the 64th minute Wolves doubled their lead as Jennings controlled a cross and sunk the ball into the back of the net.

McNamara made his final substitution as Charlotte Wilkie replaced Courtney Jones, before Walker came close with a shot over the bar in the 69th minute. Just 4 minutes later substitute Jade Cross controlled the ball in the area and coolly slotted it into the left corner of the net for her first and Wolves’ third goal.

Wolves were now in the ascendency and peppering the goal, as Jennings, Cross and Walker all came close. But it was Jade Cross again who made the breakthrough, running from the half way line, taking one touch to control the ball on the edge of the area, and slotting home to make it 4. Rampant Wolves hadn’t finished yet. Just a minute later, Cross repeated the move again to score her hat trick goal. Finally, Billie Haynes got her name on the score sheet as she ran down the left, beating the offside trap and slamming the ball into the top left corner to round off an impressive 0-6 win for Wolves.

     MOMENT OF THE MATCH

It took Wolves a while to make the breakthrough, but Captain Anna Price’s goal from Anna Morphet’s free-kick in the first half set the tone for a much more prolific second half with 5 goals.

     QUOTES:

Manager Dan McNamara was particularly pleased with the result. He said: “It was a very professional performance. It’s a tough place to come after a long drive but I thought the girls managed the game very well. “I was delighted for Jade to grab another hat trick in a Wolves shirt. That now takes her to top goal scorer and she deserves it. “There were some stand-out performers today. I thought Tammi George was excellent as well as Anna Price. Everyone played their part in a fantastic display.”

Match Report

Wolves Women finished their season in style with a fantastic 3-1 win over League Champions West Bromwich Albion Women in the Black Country Derby. A brace from Jade Cross and a Lowri Walker goal ended West Brom’s perfect league record, with Wolves finishing as runners-up.

Wolves started the game on the back foot but steadily grew into it and their efforts were eventually rewarded when Cross gave them the lead. Goalkeeper Maddie Elbro’s long goal kick over the top put pressure on the West Brom defence, they were unable to deal with the ball and it eventually fell to Cross who raced clear of the defenders and slotted past Vanessa Kinnerley in the West Brom goal.

The goal was what Wolves needed to get them going and they soon went close again, first though Jen Anslow and then through captain Anna Price. Almost against the run of play the visitors equalised just before the half-time break. Natalie Murray’s strike from distance flew over Elbro and into the top corner.

The second-half began in similar fashion to the first, with West Brom well on top but unable to find the breakthrough. It took the substitution of Lowri Walker to swing the game back Wolves’ way and she put them back ahead with almost her first touch of the game. Kinnerley superbly saved Jade Cross’s strike from close range, the ball went back out wide to Anna Morphet who whipped in a wonderful cross and there was Walker to acrobatically fire Wolves into the lead.

Wolves’ lead was then increased even further just five minutes later. Almost a carbon-copy of her first goal, Cross was played in, she raced away from the defenders and slotted home. With a considerable chunk of stoppage time came a chance for West Brom to pull one back from the penalty spot but Elbro saved Davies’s penalty brilliantly low down to her right.

     MOMENT OF THE MATCH:

Manager Dan McNamara’s substitution bringing on Lowri Walker proved a stroke of genius. She changed the whole complexion of the game when she came on and it was fitting that she scored just minutes after entering the field of play, putting Wolves back in front after they had been under the cosh.

     QUOTES:

McNamara was delighted with his team’s performance. He said: “It was a rollercoaster game. I thought our girls did brilliantly. From the first whistle we were unbelievable. I thought we were well deserved winners and I’m absolutely delighted. Captain Anna Price echoed her manager’s thoughts: “The game was hard at times; we had to dig in and soak it up. We played well today, as we have the last few weeks, we just want to build on our performances ahead of next season.” Goal scorer Jade Cross said: “I think we wanted it a little bit more today, and for me being a Wolves fan, getting a goal against West Brom is always good!”
