WOLVES IN DETAIL
Barratt & Co were a confectionery company founded in London in 1848 and by the early 1900's were the largest confectionary company in the world. To promote their goods they commenced including cards in there products in the late 1920's/early 1930's containing amongst others things cars and trains. Their first football based cards were issued around this time in their sweet cigarettes. The Barratt company was purchased by Bassett's in 1966 but continued to use the Barratt name for cards for a further couple of years.
Bassett's were founded in 1842 in Sheffield and alongside producing confectionary were wine traders. Having obtained Bassett's they continued to produce cards for a couple of years before a 6 year hiatus when they recommenced production under the Bassett name. Cards were continued to be produced until the early 1990's.
The Bassett company were acquired by Cadbury-Schweppes in 1989.
1932-35 - Football Team Folders

Issued over three season's, 1932-33, 1933-34 & 1934-35, these cards featured all 22 teams playing in the First Division at the time, 66 cards in total with Wolves featuring in all three seasons. Further cards in the series featured teams from the Second Division, Scotland and Ireland, although not full sets and not for every season.
The cards measured 80mm x 63mm in size.

1935 - FA Cup Winners 1883-1935

A series of 50 cards featuring the teams that had won the FA Cup Final over the previous 49 season's, card 50 being the FA Cup Trophy itself. Wolves featured twice.
The cards measured 70mm x 53mm in size.

1947-50 - Famous Footballers

Three Series of 50 cards issued over the three seasons. With only 79 players featuring ver the three series there was multiple number of duplications. The cards were not numbered and differed only occasionally so it is very difficult to determine which series each card came from. Wolves were represented in all three series by Bert Williams and Billy Wright.
The cards measured 63mm x 46mm in size.
1950-53 - Famous Footballers

Another three series set of 50 cards issued over three seasons. Again there was multiple duplication of players over the three sets, however, the cards were numbered this time, however, the only way to determine which series they came from is in the description on the back. Wolves were represented in each series as follows;
Series 1 & 2 - #9 Billy Wright, #40 Jimmy Mullen, #42, Bert Williams & # 50 Sammy Smyth
Series 3 - # 24 Bert Williams, #27 Billy Wright
The cards measured 63mm x 44mm in size.

This was a series of 50 cards with Wolves represented twice as shown below. The cards measured 61mm x 45mm in size.

50 cards in the series again with Wolves represented twice as shown below. The cards measured 61mm x 45mm in size.
1955 - Famous Footballers (A3)

50 cards once more, however, Wolves representation doubled in size to four player, possibly due to being the League Champions the previous season. The cards measured 61mm x 45mm in size.
1956 - Famous Footballers (A4)

A change-up in the format with 60 cards now in the series and a change in size for the first time. Wolves players selected for the series dropped to three as shown below.

1957 - Famous Footballers (A5)
​​​​​ 60 cards in this series with Wolves featured just the once. The cards measured 65mm x 35mm in size.
1958 - Famous Footballers (A6)
​​​​​ A repeat of the previous season even down to the Wolves player within the set and the photograph used. The cards measured 65mm x 35mm in size.
1959 - Famous Footballers (A7)
​​​​​ A 60 card set again, a single Wolves player included but this time a new face, Norman Deeley. The cards measured 65mm x 35mm in size.
1960 - Famous Footballers (A8)
​​​​​ Back down to 50 cards for this series, however, this time they are in colour for the first time. On the back of another League Championship Wolves representation doubled

​​​​​ 50 cards with Wolves dropping to a single player. The cards measured 65mm x 35mm in size.
1963 - Famous Footballers (A11)
​​​​​ 50 cards again this time with three Wolves players. The cards measured 65mm x 35mm in size.
1964 - Famous Footballers (A12)
​​​​​ No change from the previous series other than a couple of different Wolves players making their first and only appearance.. The cards measured 65mm x 35mm in size.
1965 - Famous Footballers (A13)
​​​​​ 50 cards with Wolves , technically, not represented. Ray Crawford was a West Bromwich Albion player when the series was published, however, he is wearing a Wolves shirt in the image. The cards measured 65mm x 35mm in size.
1966 - Famous Footballers (A14)
​​​​​ The now standard 50 card set with two Wolves players. The cards measured 65mm x 35mm in size.
1967 - Famous Footballers (A15)
​​​​​ This turned out to be the final set issued by Barratt. 50 cards again this time with a club crest added to the image. Two Wolves players as below. The cards measured 65mm x 35mm in size.
1974-75 - Football Stars
​​​​​ This was Bassetts first series, issued some eight years after the last Barratt set. A series of 50 Wolves were represented twice.. The cards measured 65mm x 35mm in size.
1975-76 - Football Stars
​​​​​ 50 cards again with two Wolves players, Mike Bailey as shown and Alan Sunderland. The cards measured 65mm x 35mm in size.
1976-77 & 1977-78 - Football Action
​​​​​ A break from the norm for this set as the series featured football action shots rather than the traditional head and shoulder shot. 50 cards in each set with Wolves represented seven times in the first set and once in the second.
1978-79 - Football
​​​​​ Back to the traditional style for the next series of 50 cards with Wolves represented twice by John McAlle and John Richards.
1979-80 - Football
​​​​​ 50 cards in the series with Wolves represented twice. The cards measured 65mm x 35mm in size.
1980-81 - Football
​​​​​ Again 50 cards in the series with Wolves represented twice. The cards measured 65mm x 35mm in size.
1981-82 - Football
50 cards in the series with Wolves represented just once this time, John Richards.
1982-83 - Football
50 cards again with Wolves represented once as shown. Size 65mm x 35mm.
1983-84 - Football
​​​​​ 50 cards in the series with Wolves featuring twice. The cards measured 65mm x 35mm in size.
1984-85 - Football
50 cards again with Wolves represented once. Size 65mm x 35mm.
1988-89 - Football
With Wolves dropping from First Division to Fourth in consecutive season's there was no representation, however, as the tide turned and a certain S G Bull started to score goals, Wolves returned. This time there were 48 cards in the series. Size 65mm x 35mm.
1989-90 - Football
48 cards again with Steve Bull again featured. Size 65mm x 35mm.
1990-91 - Football
Wolves final representation in the Bassett's series. Steve Bull was Wolves final representative in this series of 48 cards. There wre a couple of more series issued before production ceased.
